At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, National City council members approved a five-year implementation plan for the National City redevelopment area.
The Community Development Commission prepared the plan, which started in 2009 and runs through 2014 and contains the goals and objectives for the city’s project area, proposed projects and expenditures.
It also includes an explanation of how to eliminate blight and produce recovery within the project area.
City staff has come up with 18 projects and programs, 12 of which are priorities and total more than $46 million. The total is balanced against $55.4 million in revenue and remaining bond proceeds for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
Tier 1 projects include the west side Infill Transit Oriented Development, a 201- unit family affordable housing project along Paradise Creek; Eighth Street public improvements, which include reduction in travel lanes, widened sidewalks and landscaped medians; the Gateway Sudberry commercial center project; improvements to the Las Palmas Park and facilities; the Housing Acquisition and Rehabilitation Program and Senior Village expansion project.
Redevelopment goals include 14 ways to frame the projects and programs of the plan. They include eliminating and preventing the spread of blight, promoting the rehabilitation of existing housing stock and unifying the city’s harbor district and the downtown area.
