About Us

When The National City News, first published in 1882, and The Chula Vista Star (1918) merged in August 1954 it was the union of two of South County’s oldest publications.

At the time the combined population of both cities was an estimated 37,000 people.

“The merger will mean a much stronger newspaper for each of the respective cities, each with its own individuality, plus being a greatly strengthened champion of the entire South Bay region. Only that which is good should result from the merger,” newspaper executives said in a joint statement.

Seventy years later more than a quarter of a million people call Chula Vista and National City home. Through the years the newspaper’s mission remained steadfast.

Chronicling the cities’ transformations from farming communities to vibrant municipalities The Star-News has covered everything from Little League games and service club fundraisers to presidential visits and city council elections, delivering the stories that shape the South County.

A subsidiary of Integrity Newspapers, Inc., The Star-News newspaper is published every Friday while its award-winning journalism can also be found at thestarnews.com.
