Pony Baseball playoffs are in full swing as well for Chula Vista teams

The Little League Baseball playoffs are in full swing, and so are the Pony Baseball playoffs involving Chula Vista teams.

Pony-13
After finishing third at the San Diego region tournament July 7-9 in Lakeside, Chula Vista North qualified to participate in the Pony-13 Super Region tournament in Whittier and West Covina.

Sixteen teams competed in the July 13-18 tournament in which the top two teams advanced to the West Zone tournament July 20-23 in Whittier.

Chula Vista North was drawn into bracket that played in Whittier. Simi Valley, La Quinta, Heartwell, Placentia, Long Beach, Azusa and Lakeside (San Diego region champion) joined Chula Vista North in the group.sd

Wilshire, Newport Harbor, Glendora, Tecolote (San Diego region runner-up), Toluca, John Mendez, Pasadena and Perris comprised the field in West Covina.

Chula Vista North opened tourney play July 14 with a 15-2 loss to Long Beach. The Chula Vista squad staved off elimination in the double-elimination tournament with an 8-1 victory the following day against Asuza.

However, playing its third game in as many days, Chula Vista North bowed out of the tournament following a 7-2 loss to Simi Valley on July 16.

Lakeside shut out Azusa, 7-0, in its tourney opener on July 14 but dropped a 4-1 decision to Long Beach the following day. The East County squad suffered elimination on July 16 following a 6-1 setback to La Quinta.

Tecolote dropped its tourney opener, 3-2, to Glendora on July 13 and battled through the elimination bracket, winning three games before finally bowing from the tournament.

Tecolote defeated Wilshire, 7-2, in its first elimination game on July 15 and followed that with an 11-1 win over John Mendez on July 16. The San Diego xxx then defeated Newport Harbor, 6-3, in a second game on July 16 to advance to the runner-up bracket final against Glendora on July 17.

Glendora defeated Tecolote for the second tie in the tournament, 5-4, to advance to the four-team finale July 18-19 in Whittier.

La Quinta eliminated Simi Valley, 2-1, on July 16 to meet Heartwell in the runner-up bracket game. La Quinta advanced with another 2-1 win to draw into the four-team finale that also included Perris, Glendora and Long Beach.

Perris topped La Quinta, 7-5, while Long Beach shaded Glendora, 5-3. Meanwhile, La Qunita eliminated Glendora, 15-3, to narrow the field to three teams.

Long Beach edged Perris, 5-4, to advance to the West Zone tournament as the top SoCal representative.

Perris doubled up La Quinta, 4-2, to advance to the West Zone tournament as the second SoCal representative.

La Quinta finished third in the Super Region field.

The West Zone bracket included eight teams: Southeast Valley (Arizona), Bellingham (Washington), Kauai (Hawaii), Campbell, Cypress and Bel Passi, plus the two Southern California qualifiers.

Five of the eight teams entered in this year’s West Zone tournament were from California: Perris, Campbell, Cypress, Long Beach and Bel Passi.

Southeast Valley blanked Bellingham, 6-0, to open play in the zone tournament on Thursday (July 20), while Kauai topped Perris, 4-2, Campbell bested Cypress, 7-2, and Bel Passi clubbed Long Beach, 9-4.

Southeast Valley and Kauai are scheduled to meet in a second round winners bracket game on Friday (July 21), while Campbell and Bel Passi will meet in another winners bracket game on the other side of the bracket.

In early games on July 21, Perris defeated Bellingham, 15-0, in a losers bracket game while Long Beach topped Cypress, 11-2, in another losers bracket game later in the afternoon.

In a pair of games on July 22, Perris pounded Southeast Valley 13-1 while Long Beach edged Campbell 3-2 to set up a pair of games later in the day in which Perris blanked Kauai, 10-0, and Bel Passi slipped past Campbell 7-3.

The championship game took place July 23. Perris defeated Bel Passi, 3-0, in an all-Golden State final.

The West Zone winner advances to the Pony-13 World Series July 28-31 in Whittier.

Lakeside defeated Tecolote, 10-3, to win the San Diego region tournament after Tecolote forced a double-elimination championship game with a 10-4 win over Lakeside.

Chula Vista North, played as CVN Red, finished 1-2 in the San Diego region tournament. CVN Red lost, 8-4, to Lakeside in its opener, then edged CVN Black, 15-14, in a high scoring elimination game before bowing out of the four-team tournament following a 10-0 loss to Tecolote.

Tecolote topped CVN Black, 10-3, in another opening round game.

Lakeside advanced to the Super Region tournament with a 3-1 record while Tecolote carried a 3-2 record into the  tournament.

Pony-14
Chula Vista North and Chula Vista South both participated in the five-team San Diego region tournament July 14-17 in Lakeside.

In opening games, Chula Vista North blasted Tecolote, 13-2, while Lakeside topped Chula Vista South, 6-2.

Chula Vista North defeated the Emerald Diamonds in a second round winners bracket game and clubbed host Lakeside, 19-1, in the winners bracket final.

Chula Vista South defeated Tecolote, 12-6, in an elimination game; however, CV South lost 19-2 to Emerald in an ensuing elimination game while Emerald went on to eliminate Lakeside 11-0.

Emerald dueled Chula Vista North in a two-game championship series, winning by scores of 8-2 and 10-7 to win the region championship.

The top three teams from the San Diego regional advanced to the Super Region tournament July 27-30 in Los Alamitos/Long Beach.

Emerald and Lakeside will play in the Super Region bracket in Los Alamitos while Chula Vista North will play in the Super Region bracket in Long Beach.

The Los Alamitos bracket includes East 1, West 2, Los Alamitos, Lakeside, Emerald, Garden Grove, Corona and Wilshire.

The Long Beach bracket includes La Quinta, Chula Vista North, East 3, Long Beach, West 1, East 2, Westhills and Newport Beach.

Chula Vista North will meet La Quinta in its bracket opener July 27 at noon. The winner advances to meet the East 3-Long Beach winner on July 28 at 5 p.m.

The Bracket A winner (Los Alamitos) plays the Bracket B winner (Long Beach) July 30 at Los Alamitos to determine which team advances to the West Zone tournament Aug. 3-6 in Los Altos/Mountain View.

The West Zone tournament includes eight teams: Southern California, Northern California-2, host Los Altos/Mountain View, Utah, Washington, Northern California-1, Maui (Hawaii) and the Cave Creek Coyotes from Arizona.

The West Zone champion advances to the Pony World Series Aug. 11-16 in Washington, Pa.

Bronco Division

Paradise Hills competed in the South/East San Diego section tournament June 13-26 at Tecolote.

North City Blue defeated North City White, 13-9, to win the tournament championship while San Diego Competitive captured third place as all three teams advanced to the San Diego region tournament July 11-17 at Tecolote.

Eight teams competed in the section tournament: La Jolla Blue, Mira Mesa, North City Blue, Emerald Sharks, Emerald SoCal, North City White, Paradise Hills and Ramona.

Paradise Hills lost, 11-5, in its opener to Ramona and was eliminated from the tournament after absorbing a 14-4 loss to Mira Mesa.

North City Blue defeated San Diego Competitive, 17-7, to win the San Diego region tournament that also included teams representing Escondido, San Marcos and Tecolote.

The top two teams from the San Diego region advanced to the 16-team Super Region tournament July 20-25 in Whittier.
