Trial for suspected bank robber

Tykeem DeShawn Nelson, 20, has been ordered to stand trial on 11 felonies including robbing two banks in Chula Vista and National City, and attempted rape and kidnapping of an employee inside a San Diego store.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Melinda Lasater dismissed one robbery charge during a preliminary hearing last month in which many robbery victims testified.

He appeared in court on Sept. 22, and he will get a trial date set on Oct. 21.

Nelson is accused of robbing the U.S. Bank on H Street in Chula Vista on June 18, and the Chase Bank on East Plaza Boulevard in National City on June 15. Nelson is also accused of robbing an adult bookstore, a pool supply business, two other banks and a furniture store in San Diego.

Deputy District Attorney Makenzie Harvey said the female employee at the furniture store was moved to the back office where he tried to rape her. Harvey said the charge for kidnapping for rape was added because she was moved against her will in the Feb. 26 incident.

Nelson has pleaded not guilty and remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility on $1 million bail.
