Local, federal officials team up to collect unwanted medication

The city of Chula Vista Office of Sustainability, Chula Vista Police Department, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration are teaming up to provide the public the opportunity to dispose of unwanted prescription medications.

Community members can drop off expired, unused, or unwanted prescription drugs for disposal at the John Lippett Public Works Center located at 1800 Maxwell Road. The semi-annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This event is free, anonymous, with no questions asked. No liquids, needles, or sharps can be accepted.

Last October, Americans turned in 300 tons of prescription drugs at almost 5,000 drop-off sites operated by the DEA and nearly 4,400 state and local law enforcement partners. The DEA, along with law enforcement partners, has now collected 8,950 tons of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription medications since the inception of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative in 2010.
