Man admits he stabbed people he did not know

A Chula Vista man charged with four random stabbings in Chula Vista pleaded guilty March 17 to committing three of them and has agreed to accept a 26-year prison term.

Gerardo Bejar, 45, made the surprise guilty plea to three counts of assault with a deadly weapon before Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Garry Haehnle who set sentencing for April 14.

Bejar admitted to two stabbings in Nov., 2015 and a third one that occurred Nov. 24, 2014. He admitted sentencing enhancements that he inflicted great bodily injury upon two people.

A motive is still unknown, said Deputy District Attorney Victor Ou, who described the attacks as “completely random.” Bejar has been in prison before for a previous stabbing, Ou said.

The preliminary hearing that was set for March 23 was canceled and the victims will not have to testify. The attempted murder charges will be dismissed.

A woman in a wheelchair was stabbed in the back on Nov. 17, 2015 on Industrial Boulevard. A second stabbing victim was attacked Nov. 23 at 7:30 a.m. at the back of a Target store.

The last one occurred Dec. 1 to a man who was stabbed in the back on K Street. Bejar got out of his Mustang while he was in traffic, stabbed the man, and then got back into his car and drove off. The only commonality with all of the attacks is that they occurred outdoors.

Chula Vista Police arrested Bejar Dec. 1. He remains in jail on $3 million bail.
