Jury finds knife-wielding sister guilty

A woman has been convicted of attempted murder in the stabbing of her sister’s boyfriend in National City in 2015.

The Chula Vista Superior Court jury found Christina Maria Daniel, 34, guilty of attempted murder and assault with a knife upon Antonio Garcia, 44. The jury on June 26 determined the victim had suffered great bodily injury in which he was stabbed in the head, back, abdomen, and hand.

Sentencing was set for Aug. 2. Deputy District Attorney Matthew Williams said she faces a prison term of 28 years.

The incident took place on Nov. 27, 2015 at Garcia’s home in the 2800 block of Alta Drive in National City. The day before, the mother of Daniel and her sister showed up at the home to move the sister’s possessions out of the residence. Garcia said he did not want any of the property removed.

Later, Daniel showed up at the residence. Garcia but was hit on the head with a pipe by a man accompanying Daniel, according to court records. Garcia lost consciousness. After Daniel and the other man left, Garcia regained consciousness and called 911. He was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Daniel was a fugitive for months when she got involved in another incident in City Heights in which a woman was stabbed to death. Daniel was found guilty of second-degree murder by a jury in San Diego Superior Court.

Daniel was sentenced to 36 years to life in prison on June 29, said Deputy District Attorney spokeswoman Tanya Sierra on Monday. Daniel was convicted of killing Jasmine Ruiz, 29, who was stabbed and then struck by a car in an alley in the 4100 block of Wilson Street in San Diego.

The 36-year sentence will likely run consecutive to whatever Daniel receives for the attempted murder in National City.

Williams said that Garcia disappeared and could not be located to testify in Daniel’s trial, but statements he made to police and others were admitted as evidence. Garcia told police Daniel threatened him with a gun outside his home, and he went inside and locked the door. Daniel and the other man rammed the door and broke in, said the victim.

Because Garcia did not testify, charges of burglary and robbery were dismissed and not considered by the jury, said Williams.

Daniel remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility without bail.
