California District 42 Little League crowned its 2018 Tournament of Champions in four divisions June 19 and June 21 at Imperial Beach Little League in front of large, boisterous and supportive crowds.

•Chula Vista American defeated Sweetwater Valley, 14-8, to win the 6U Division championship.

•Sweetwater Valley defeated Park View, 11-9, to capture the 8U Division trophy.

•Sweetwater Valley defeated Park View, 7-3, to claim the Minor Division title.

•The Eastlake Braves got the championship parade rolling with a 12-1 victory against Sweetwater Valley to secure the Major Division championship banner.

District 42’s annual all-star championship tournament got its start last Friday as the Intermediate Division got a chance to showcase itself at Sweetwater Valley Little League.

The division is for children aged 11-13 and serves as a bridge between Little League and Junior League with extended basepaths and pitching distances (50/70 for Intermediate League as opposed to 40/60 for Little League).

In Wednesday’s championship game, Eastlake defeated Sweetwater Valley 10-1.

Jake Davis pitched a complete game, giving up only one run. Diego Trujillo scored two runs with inside the park home runs while Taye Howell also score on an inside the park home run.

Eastlake won all three of its tournament games, defeating Luckie Waller, 17-7, and Sweetwater Valley, 10-0, to advance to the championship rematch against Luckie Waller, last year’s district champion.

Eastlake’s manager Gerry Huerta cited team chemistry as a strength for this year’s district championship team.

“The chemistry the boys have on the field is a strength, which leads to unselfish play,” Huerta explained. “They all play for each other.”

Besides Davis, Trujillo and Howell, Eastlake’s lineup also includes the following players: David Cortes, James Cummings, Anthony Hinojosa, Kyler Lagdamen, Manuel Ovadia, Tyler Toon, Orlando Berrios, Adien Juarez, Michael Mason and Carlos Quinones.

The team’s coaches are Adrian Hinojosa and Orlando Berrios.

Eastlake will next compete in the nine-team Southern California Division III tournament, starting Saturday and ending July 15 in Ventura.

Eastlake, designated the Section 7 champion, will meet the Section 9 champion in its first game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The winner advances to meet the winner of Saturday’s opening-round contest between Section 3 and Section 5 on Monday, July 9.

Double-elimination play continues through to the championship game.

All-Star Summer
District 42 will hold championship tournaments in five age divisions this year. Besides the Intermediate Division, other championship divisions include 10U, 11U, 12U and Junior League (14U).

Park View opened play in the Junior Division all-star tournament with a 19-3 win over Luckie Waller Wednesday. The game was called after three-and-a-half-innings due to a new 15-run mercy rule.

Park View continued its winning ways with a 15-0 win over Sweetwater Valley on Thursday to advance to Saturday’s division championship game, starting at noon at Park View Little League.

District play starts this weekend in the younger age groups.

The 10U, 11U and 12U championship finals are scheduled to take place July 7 at Sweetwater Valley Little League.
