The 10th annual Hockey Week Across America event will celebrate everything about the sport – both ice and inline – Sunday, Feb. 19, through Sunday, Feb. 26.
The period coincides with the start of the CIF-Metro Conference’s annual Kiwanis Cup championship roller hockey playoffs. First round play faces off Wednesday, Feb. 22. Quarterfinals are scheduled Monday, Feb. 27.
Twelve of the conference’s 16 teams will qualify for post-season play. The top four-seeded teams will receive a first-round bye, with the bottom eight-seeded teams squaring off in first-round action.
Sweetwater Union High School District teams expect to comprise a majority of the teams in action in next Wednesday’s opening round.
The Eastlake Titans (Mesa League) and Castle Park Trojans South Bay League) secured league titles in a pair of games played Monday at the Castle Park High School roller rink. The Titans sped past east side rival Otay Ranch, 17-4, on the strength of 15 unanswered goals, while the Trojans held off a late charge by Sweetwater to nip the Red Devils by a score of 4-3.
Eastlake (15-2 overall) expects to earn one of the mid-level seeds for the upcoming Kiwanis Cup playoffs.
“Our team played exceptionally well,” explained EHS assistant coach Steve Guzman, whose team rolled to its seventh consecutive win. “We tend to get better as we go through games. We start communicating together and pass the puck around.”
First-year CPHS head coach Jose Mendoza said his team had to dig deep within to emerge in the winners circle.
“Heart kept us in the game,” Mendoza offered in the glow of victory. “It was a great game.”
Both the Titans and Trojans had to post come-from-behind victories.
Otay Ranch, winner of the Gold Division championship at the midseason Pam Wiser Classic tournament, racked up three goals in the opening four-and-a-half minutes to place Eastlake in a quick 3-0 deficit.
But the Titans tightened up defensively and goaltender Aryn Gregory played near-perfect positioning the rest of the way while Eastlake’s own ferocious offense took center court to stage the whirlwind comeback.
Jake Powell (four goals, five assists) and frosh sensation Braden Mayer (three goals, six assists) led the Titans’ offensive charge with nine points each. Mayer was all over the skating surface while speeding to break up passes on defense as well as speed past Mustang defenders to either score goals or set up teammates for scores.
Ditto for Powell, who used his long reach to knock the puck off the sticks of Otay Ranch attackers then start the attack going the other way.
Sean Layton and Percilla Mayer also turned in standout defensive games. Layton also contributed offensively with five goals.
Will Hamilton chipped in with three points on two goals and one assist while Jose Campos collected a pair of goals.
“When we were down 3-0, I told the team to settle down,” Guzman said. “I expected Otay Ranch to come out fast. They’re a fast team. We knew as the game went on that we’d get stronger.”
Teen Titans
Eastlake technically clinched the Mesa League title with its 10-2 win over Bonita Vista last Friday. The Titans entered this week holding a three-game advantage in the loss column with two league games remaining.
But Eastlake put some meaning into its final game against Otay Ranch to prove it was indeed the best team on the court in league play.
“Sometimes we start out fast and sometimes we start out slow,” Guzman offered. “We know we’ve got to skate together for the entire game regardless of what position we’re in.”
The Titans have not lost since being edged, 5-4, by Otay Ranch in the division championship game of the Pam Wiser tournament on Jan. 16.
The Mustangs dropped to 4-4 in league play, 10-6-1 overall, following Monday’s setback. Sean Devaney led his team with three points on one goal and two assists while David Mendez popped in a pair of goals and Aaron Marientes scored once.
Otay Ranch shares second place in the league standings with Hilltop after the Lancers defeated longtime rival Bonita Vista, 9-3, to improve to 4-4 in league play, 8-9-1 overall. The Barons remained winless in league play at 0-7 but are 6-11 overall.
All four Mesa League teams have one league game remaining on their regular season schedules.
Trojan horse
Castle Park returned to the championship circle after last winning the South Bay League title in 2014-15. The Trojans qualified for the Kiwanis Cup playoffs that season, dropping a first-round game to Eastlake by a score of 15-4.
Mendoza’s team overcame a slow start to this season to rise to the top of the league standings. The Trojans, who close out regular season play against Mar Vista (1-8 in league, 2-15 overall) on Friday, can finish no worse than a co-champion. A season-ending win over the Mariners will prevent any other league opponent from finishing alongside them.
The drama behind Monday’s game can be put in a nutshell. If Castle Park won, it would capture no worse than a share of the league championship. However, if Sweetwater emerged victorious in its remaining high profile league encounters against Castle Park and Chula Vista, the Red Devils could have claimed the title instead.
The possibility was also open for a tri-championship between Castle Park, Sweetwater and Chula Vista (last year’s champion) if the Red Devils had defeated the Trojans in Monday’s game and then dropped Friday’s league game to Chula Vista.
Castle Park improved to 9-2 in league play, 13-7 overall, after keeping Sweetwater out of the win column. The Devils saw their record dip to 7-3 in league play, 10-7 overall.
Chula Vista is 7-3, 10-7-1 overall, entering its final two league match-ups against Mar Vista on Thursday and Sweetwater on Friday, both make-up games.
The Devils took an early 1-0 lead in Monday’s high stakes encounter on a goal by SuHi ironman Phillip Brandon. Sweetwater entered the second period holding that one-goal advantage before the Trojans exploded on the court with four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead in the game.
Martin Mari got the Trojans rolling by scoring on a second effort play by putting in his own rebound.
Team scoring leader Eleazar Cruz, assisted by Adolfo Medina, put Castle Park up 2-1 after driving in a draw off the face-off to the left of the SuHi netminder.
Mari scored the next two Trojan goals to finish the game with a hat trick. Medina drew an assist on Mari’s final goal.
The Devils scored the only two goals of the third period to draw closer on the scoreboard. Marco Salazar made it a 4-2 game when he scored a power play goal with the Devils owning a two-person advantage (four-on-two). However, Sweetwater could not exploit its remaining one-person advantage.
Brandon made it a 4-3 contest with 2:25 to play in regulation, but CP’s skaters retreated into a defensive shell to prevent any further scoring by Sweetwater.
“Those penalties put us in defensive mode,” Mendoza said. “I think we got tired after that but our heart stayed in it and we got it done.”
The Devils were visibly disappointed after the setback.

Hilltop 9, Bonita Vista 3
Monday’s game between original conference rivals was close and intense until the Lancers began to pull away midway through the game. Hilltop led, 2-0, early on goals by Danny Godinez and Trevor Fune. The Barons got one back on a goal by sophomore Nick Stark to make the score 2-1 before Eddie Arguello gave the Lancers a 3-1 lead to end the opening period.
Hilltop added some breathing room as Fune netted the opening goal of the second period to extend the Lancers lead to 4-1. But Bonita Vista rattled off two quick goals to make it a one-goal game at 4-3. Stark had the first goal, assisted by Matt Custodio, while Bo Santos scored an unassisted goal to trim the Barons’ deficit to one goal.
Hilltop put the game on ice by scoring the game’s final five goals. The Lancers entered the final period leading 7-3.
Godinez and Fune led the Hilltop scoring parade each with three goals and one assist while Arguello potted two goals, Cathy Etchechruy scored once while Caleb Macias recorded two assists and Kristen Lambertson tacked on one assist.
Stark led Bonita Vista with two goals.
The Kiwanis Cup semifinals are scheduled March 1. The Kiwanis Cup championship game is scheduled March 6.
Red Devils, Spartans take hopeful playoff inclusion down to the wire in exciting finish
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Feb. 17, 2017 — The Chula Vista Spartans and Sweetwater Red Devils already enjoy an intense rivalry. But Friday morning’s South Bay League regular season finale likely had an even more intense meaning: a berth in the upcoming Kiwanis Cup playoffs.
Sweetwater defeated Chula Vista, 7-6, in a game that went down to the last shot. With the win, the Red Devils edged the Spartans for second place in the league standings.
Sweetwater finished with a 9-3 league record; Chula Vista finished with an 8-4 league record.
Both teams finished behind league champion Castle Park, which posted a10-2 league record.
Twelve of the CIF-Metro Conference’s 16 teams will qualify for the upcoming Kiwanis Cup playoffs. The seven teams from the North County League expect to qualify. That leaves five of the nine Sweetwater district teams in position to secure playoff spots.
In other words, as many as four of the Sweetwater district teams likely will not be participating in postseason play this year.
Both the Red Devils and Spartans hope to be among the five teams included in the playoffs.
Seeding will take place Saturday morning.
“It feels good to come back after a couple of tough losses we’ve had lately and play like we were playing at the beginning of the season, and finish out the regular season,” SuHi’s Marco Salazar said.
Sweetwater carried a 5-2 lead into the final period; the Red Devils had just enough of a cushion to post the key victory.
CV scoring machine Hector Garcia narrowed the score to 6-4 with one of his game-high six goals with 5:55 to play in regulation. Phillip Brandon extended Sweetwater’s lead to 7-5 with his fourth goal of the game 52 seconds later.
But Garcia got back in the scoring column with 1:54 to play in the third period to once again narrow the score to one goal. The goal proved to be the most pivotal scored of the season as it gave Garcia the district scoring title by one point over Otay Ranch’s Sean Devaney.
Sweetwater goaltender Juan Meza stopped Garcia on a breakaway with eight seconds left in the period and Chula Vista got a brief power play opportunity with five seconds to play.
But the National City team managed to survive the late scare when a Chula Vista pass-out attempt from the face-off dot went wide of a Spartan stick.
Brandon led the winners with four goals while Salazar contributed two goals and one assist. Adrian Kercher scored one goal while Jesus Meza picked up one assist.
Sweetwater will enter the seeding meeting with a 12-8 overall record; Chula Vista is 11-9-1.
Both teams will hope for the best.
Castle Park is 14-7 overall and, as a league champion, could host a first-round playoff game next Wednesday.
The Trojans closed out their season of plenty also on Friday morning amid blustery conditions by turning back Mar Vista 13-1. Castle Park used an early blitz to rack up an 8-0 first period lead and coasted from there.
Jared Fuentes enjoyed a breakout game with three goals and three assists for the Trojans while teammates Martin Mari and Eleazar Cruz each collected three goals and one assist. Adolfo Medina contributed two goals and one assist while Jesus Gonzalez scored two goals. Irvin Castillo picked up two assists.
Castle Park built a 13-0 lead in the game. The game ended with the Mariner goaltender stopping a shot at the buzzer to end regular season play.
Anthony Rodriguez scored the lone goal for Mar Vista, which finished 2-8 in league play, 3-18 overall.
Barons capture Valentine’s Day encounter with Mariners 11-1
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Feb. 14, 2017 – Matt Custodio was high point man for Bonita Vista in its 11-1 non-league win over Mar Vista on Tuesday with four goals and one assist. Bo Santos recorded a hat trick for the Bartons (7-11 overall).
In a South Bay League game on Tuesday, Sweetwater rebounded from Monday’s loss to Castle Park by defeating Southwest by a score of 5-2. Phillip Brandon led the Red Devils with three goals while Angel Bonilla was credited with a goal and assist for Southwest.
Mustangs rout Red Devils, 12-2, to pick up 11th win of season
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Feb. 15, 2017 – Otay Ranch’s Sean Devaney continued his quest toward finishing atop the scoring table among Sweetwater district teams by racking up eight points on five goals and three assists in Wednesday’s 12-2 non-league win over Sweetwater. David Mendez collected two goals and two assists while Aaron Marientes recorded two goals and one assist in the victory.
Paul Chavez had one goal and one assist for the Mustangs (11-6-1 overall).
Phillip Brandon had one goal and one assist for the Red Devils (11-8 overall) while Adrian Kercher scored once.
Hilltop 5, Chula Vista 1
Trevor Fune led the Lancers (9-9-1 overall) with four goals in the non-league win over the Spartans (10-8-1 overall). Hector Garcia picked up the lone goal for Chula Vista, assisted by Allison Smith.
Mar Vista 6, Southwest 4
The teams’ annual rivalry game proved to be an exciting affair as Southwest rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to close to within one goal on the scoreboard in the latter stages of the third period. The Mariners then put the South Bay League game on ice with a late insurance goal.
Ben Brown scored the opening two goals of the game for Mar Vista (2-8 in league, 3-16 overall). The Mariners then received goals from Alyssa Mxx and Isaac Suarez to jump out in front by four goals early in the second period.
But the Raiders reeled off the next two goals to cut the deficit in half. Angel Bonilla got Southwest (1-11 in league, 1-19 overall) on the scoreboard and Kayleigh Andrew scored the Raiders’ second goal to make the score 4-2 in the Mariners’ favor at the end of the second period.
Mar Vista extended its lead to 5-2 on a power play goal by Allie Welch early in the third period. The Raiders then pumped in two consecutive goals to trim the MV lead to 5-4. Bonilla and Andrew both drew assists on the goals.
Bryan Suarez scored in the dying seconds to hand the Mariners a two-goal cushion.
Clash of the Titans goes to Poway, 7-6, in overtime
The final game of Wednesday’s quadruple-header featured a high level non-league match-up between the Eastlake Titans and Poway Titans. Both teams were looking for a win to firm up their positions in the conference rankings.
Eastlake raced out to a 4-1 advantage but Poway continued to gain momentum throughout the game, scoring three times in the second period to trim Eastake’s lead to 6-4 and then scoring twice more in the third period to tie the game and send it into sudden-victory overtime.
Both teams, skating three-on-three in the extra frame, had chances to score but Poway’s speed caused Eastlake problems at the end and Michael Little roped in a break-out shot to end the game with 2:27 left in the OT period.
The win was only the third all season for Poway, which competes in the rugged North County League. Both of Poway’s wins to date had been against NCL cellar-dweller Patrick Henry.
“It was an exciting game,” PHS head coach David Adamiec said. “Our team never gave up. We’ve worked hard on our conditioning. We managed to keep our energy throughout the game.”
Little was the big man on the score sheet for Poway with four goals. Jeff Bauer and Cliff Schrader each picked up one goal and one assist while Carter Schrader had one goal and Pat Johnson had one assist.
Little made it a 6-5 game with 4:40 to play in the third period and Bauer tied the game with 3:20 to play in regulation.
Sean Layton keyed Eastlake (15-3) with four goals while Jake Powell scored twice and added one assist. Seiya Hibuya and Will Hamilton each picked up assists on back-to-back goals by Layton midway through the second period to push Eastlake ahead 6-2.
But the Mesa League leaders failed to score from there as Poway rattled off five consecutive goals to rally for the win.

Titans top Barons, 10-2, to clinch Mesa League title with two league games remaining
CASTLE PARK HIGH SCHOOL, Feb. 10 – The Eastlake Titans became the first Sweetwater district roller hockey team to officially clinch a league championship in the 2016-17 season after the Titans rolled past Mesa League rival Bonita Vista by a score of 10-2 Friday evening.
The win raised Eastlake’s record to 7-0 in league play, 14-2 overall. The Titans have a three-game lead on the second place Otay Ranch Mustangs (4-3 in league play, 10-5-1 overall) and a four-game lead on the third place Hilltop Lancers (3-4, 8-9) with two league games remaining on the regular season schedule.
Bonita Vista dropped to 0-7 in league play, 6-10 overall.
Freshman wunderkind Braden Mayer once again led the way on the scoresheet for Eastlake with five goals while teammate Jake Powell collected three goals and one assist. Sean Layton contributed two goals and one assist while Will Hamilton dished out two assists and Karla Navarrete chipped in with one assist.
Anna and Matt Custodio connected on both goals for the Barons, who trailed 8-0 through two periods.
Anna Custodio scored both goals while Matt Custodio drew both assists.
Powell scored one shorthanded goal in the game for the Titans, who have gone unbeaten in their last six games.
In other games on Friday, Otay Ranch rolled past Hilltop, 15-4, to move past the Lancers into sole possession of second place in the league standings.
Sean Devaney led the Mustangs with seven goals and two assists while David Mendez racked up three goals and three assists in the blowout win. Otay Ranch also received three goals and one assist from Aaron Marientes and one goal and two assists from Paul Chavez.
Eddie Arguello led Hilltop with two goals and one assist while Danny Godinez contributed a goal and assist in the loss.
In the final game of the night, Mar Vista bounced back from an early 2-0 deficit to tip South Bay League rival Southwest, 4-3, in a shootout.
Jasmine Canonizado scored twice to pace Southwest to a 2-0 lead. Kayleigh Andrew assisted on the first goal; Mar Vista inadvertently scored into its own net, with Canonizado receiving credit for the goal as the closest Raider player to the net.
The gift goal looked like it might hold up as the game-winner until Southwest incurred a five-minute major for boarding with 13:17 remaining in the game. The Mariners had the opportunity to score as many goals as possible during the five-minute penalty but could only manage one off the stick of Tony Rodriguez, assisted by Brian Suarez.
Mar Vista kept up the momentum from there and sent the game into overtime on a goal by Adam Yoshingi, assisted by Rodriguez.
There was no scoring in the five-minute sudden-victory overtime period, with Southwest goaltender Mari Cornel sticking several shots aside and smothering rebounds.
The Mariners won the three-round shootout 2-1 on goals by Suarez and Rodriguez.
Both teams scored on their first attempts, then MV netminder Ben Brown stopped the final two Raider shot attempts.
Canonizado scored the lone shootout goal for Southwest.
With the win — the first in league play for the Mariners this season – Mar Vista (1-8 in league, 2-15 overall) moved ahead of the Raiders (1-9 in league, 1-17 overall) in the league standings.
