Southwest Raiders advance to Division V CIF girls volleyball final

When the Southwest and San Ysidro high school girls volleyball teams each won their quarterfinal-round playoff matches on Saturday, they assured there would be at least one Metro Conference representative in this weekend’s San Diego Section championship finals.

Top-seeded Southwest swept eighth-seeded Bonsall 25-14, 25-19, 25-9 while fourth-seeded San Ysidro swept fifth-seeded Monte Vista 3-0.

Southwest and San Ysidro met in Wednesday’s semifinals after the teams split their two South Bay League regular season matchups. Southwest (20-10) emerged as the winner in Wednesday’s rubber match, 3-1, to advance to Friday’s Division V championship at Canyon Crest Academy.

The Raiders — victorious over San Ysidro (15-13) by scores of 25-13, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20 — will face second-seeded O’Farrell Charter (13-12) in the championship final. Game time is 5 p.m.

O’Farrell slipped past sixth-seeded Madison (17-10) in five hotly contested games 25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-10.

Southwest and San Ysidro were among four South Bay League teams entered in this year’s playoff field. The Raiders finished 7-3 in league play while the Cougars were 5-5. Hilltop won the league title with a 10-0 league record and received the No. 2 seed in the Division IV playoffs while Sweetwater finished 5-5 in league play and received the No. 16 seed in the Division IV field.

Tenth-seeded High Tech High Chula Vista upset Hilltop (27-8) by scores of 25-13, 20-25,25-20, 25-16 in Saturday’s Division IV quarterfinals while Sweetwater (11-18) lost in five games to top-seeded High Tech High San Diego in the opening round.

HTH Chula Vista finished 18-11 on the season after dropping a five-game match-up to sixth-seeded Santana (19-8) in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Fifth-seeded Ocean View Christian Academy (17-2) ended its season with a 3-2 loss to HTH San Diego (22-8) in Wednesday’s Division IV semifinals 16-25, 25-16, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9.

In semifinal contests on Tuesday, seventh-seeded Eastlake (22-18) fell 3-2 to third-seeded Westview (18-15) in a Division I clash while third-seeded Mater Dei Catholic (25-10) ended its season with a 3-2 loss — 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-6 — at second-seeded El Camino (29-9) in a Division III match-up.

Eastlake, Olympian, Otay Ranch, Mater Dei Catholic and Montgomery represented the Mesa League in this year’s CIF playoff field.

Eastlake had upset second-seeded Ramona (22-11) 25-16, 25-13, 25-22 in last Friday’s quarterfinals.

Jacky Ortiz led San Ysidro with 76 kills, 49 aces and 392 digs during the regular season.
