Mural project envisions vibrant business corridor

“Murals serve as more than colorful art. They play a pivotal role in beautifying communities, revitalizing streets, and creating a welcoming atmosphere for residents and tourists,” says Envision Broadway representative Paul Levikow. Envision Broadway is an initiative dedicated to transforming neighborhoods through vibrant murals and community engagement. Institute for Public Strategies Senior Media Specialist Paul Levikow said it is looking for businesses, organizations, and individuals interested in becoming sponsors of the murals.

“The call to action promotes community involvement, enhances neighborhoods, and allows companies to actively participate in local revitalization efforts alone the Broadway business corridor,” he said in a press release. “Murals serve as more than colorful art. They play a pivotal role in beautifying communities, revitalizing streets, and creating a welcoming atmosphere for residents and tourists. They beautify walls and attract businesses, bolster the local economy, and contribute to the region’s cultural tapestry.”

Envision Broadway Beautification Committee Chair Julio Martha said the positive impact seen on business where they have created murals changes the clientele that goes to the location, slows traffic in the area, and creates a sense of pride in the community.

“There are studies where it shows that it almost eliminates crime. Displaced people won’t sit around a mural because there’s too much foot traffic around it,” said Martha.

The Envision Broadway Mural Project enhances community empowerment, allowing residents to prioritize their needs and make improvements along the corridor. By bolstering the economic vitality of Broadway, Envision Broadway aligns with the County of San Diego’s Live Well vision, promoting a multicultural business district that encourages healthy choices and cultivates the highest quality of life for all, Levikow stated.

“The goal is to place 18 murals along Broadway business and residential walls. Funds are needed to pay for the murals and sponsorship packages are available at various levels of investment. So far, three murals have been painted as part of Envision Broadway,” he said.

“It’s not only going to beautify your building, but also bring you more business,” Martha stated. “Think of all the benefits. You’re not only contributing to your community, but you’re also bringing a community together.”

Mural painting events involve engaging youth to deter substance use disorders. Through collaboration with South Bay Youth for Change, students and volunteers actively participate in mural painting sessions that incorporate themes advocating for an alcohol and drug-free lifestyle. The initiative provides positive activities that steer young individuals away from harmful habits, said Levikow.
