Montgomery High School’s girls soccer team finished undefeated to win its Premier Division bracket at the second annual South Bay Classic tournament Jan. 2-4 hosted by Montgomery and San Ysidro high schools.

The Lady Aztecs defeated Hoover (5-1), Brawley (7-1) and Sweetwater (4-2) to reach the championship match against University City.

Montgomery won the finals match-up, 3-2, in grand comeback fashion.

“Winning the championship was fun,” head coach Daniel Hernandez said. “We played top competition in University City. They’re a great team. We were trailing 2-0 and we came back and scored three goals.

Alexa Ramirez, Alexis Araiza and Lucia Gonzalez all scored in the championship game to lift the Lady Aztecs.

““We have a young team, we only have three seniors,” Hernandez elaborated. “We have a mix of freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are still learning the system and getting better every day. We’re getting there little by little. But my team plays with its heart; it never gives up.”

More than 40 teams participated in the second edition of the South Bay Classic, including freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams and teams from as far away as Florida.

Montgomery (5-4-3 overall) is off to a 1-1-1 start in Mesa League play following a 3-0 loss to Otay Ranch, a 4-1 win over Mar Vista and a 2-2 draw at Chula Vista last Friday.

Gabby Rendon and Naty Mendez scored goals in last Friday’s game. Chula Vista’s Sulema Fausto tied the game early in the second half on a breakaway down the center of the field.
