Honoring heritage and service: May celebrations at SWC

Dr. Mark Sanchez

As we step into the vibrant month of May, Southwestern College (SWC) proudly celebrates the richness of our community through two significant observances: Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and Military Appreciation Month. These national recognitions offer us a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the diversity, resilience, and dedication that shape our college and the communities we serve.

Celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month: A Tapestry of Cultures
AANHPI Heritage Month is a time to honor the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and enduring contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. These communities have long been instrumental in shaping the social, economic, and cultural fabric of our nation—and our campus is no exception.

At SWC, we are committed to fostering an environment where all cultures are not only welcomed but celebrated. We are proud to offer robust academic and student support programs designed to honor and explore AANHPI identities. One example is our Asian American Studies program, which empowers students to examine the complexities and contributions of AANHPI communities throughout U.S. history and modern life.

We also nurture community through dedicated learning cohorts such as Bayan and Sangam. Bayan, a Filipino-focused learning community whose name means “home” in Tagalog, provides a space where students can see their culture reflected in the curriculum and feel deeply supported on their academic journey. Sangam, named after the word for “gathering” in several South Asian languages, brings together students who share similar backgrounds and aspirations, creating a strong and united learning experience.

As one student, Altaire Nguyen, shared: “At SWC, I was very glad to find that there was a learning community, Sangam, catered to AANHPI students that wasn’t just for Filipino heritage. Through this learning community, my peers, and my advisors, I’ve felt a lot of support and encouragement to show off my culture and heritage. I’ve been given so many opportunities that surround my Asian American identity, and I am so grateful to have those experiences.”

These words reflect the essence of what we strive to build at SWC: a place where every student can find their voice, their power, and their purpose. Additionally, Altaire recently spoke at the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors meeting on behalf of the children of refugees as the County recognized the fall of Saigon and our Vietnamese community.
To kick off the month, we invite the campus and surrounding community to join us for our AANHPI Heritage Month Celebration on May 1, from 12–1 p.m. at the SWC Botanical Garden. This joyful event will feature entertainment, food, and inspiring speakers who highlight the beauty, strength, and diversity of AANHPI communities. It’s a perfect way to come together, learn, and celebrate.

Honoring Our Military and Veterans
May is also Military Appreciation Month, and at SWC, we are especially proud of the role we play in supporting our veterans, active-duty service members, and military-connected students.

Our Veterans Resource Center (VRC) provides a welcoming space on campus where veterans can access academic counseling, GI Bill and VA benefits assistance, and a supportive network of peers and staff who understand the unique challenges of transitioning from military to civilian life.

We know that leaving the military can be both exciting and uncertain. That’s why SWC offers clear career pathways that are ideal for those ready to apply their leadership, discipline, and hands-on experience to new careers. From fire technology and police academy to drone operations, nursing, and automotive technology, our programs are designed to meet the needs of our region—and our returning heroes.

One of our female Veteran students shared their experience: “Southwestern College’s Veterans Resource Center has played a vital role in helping me navigate the challenges of returning to school over ten years after graduating high school. The support I’ve found there—from meaningful friendships to a strong community of fellow veterans and an inspiring mentor in my boss—has made this transition feel far less overwhelming and much more rewarding.”

Whether service members are ready to pursue a degree, develop new technical skills, or transfer to a four-year university, SWC is here to support their next mission.

Looking Ahead to Commencement
We will close this month of celebration and reflection with one of the most joyful events in the academic year: our Commencement Ceremony on May 30. On this proud day, we will celebrate the achievements of more than 1,000 graduates—students who are ready to transfer to top universities or step directly into careers that serve our communities and strengthen our regional workforce.

We are also honored to present this year’s Honorary Degree to Jerry McCormick, a true trailblazer in the field of journalism and a champion of representation. Being a pioneer can be tough, and Jerry McCormick has grown used to being the first—or the only. He was the first Black Editor at a major metropolitan newspaper and was in the first cohort of the National Association of Black Journalists. Mr. McCormick is the founding President of the San Diego Association of Black Journalists and created their “Pro for a Day” bootcamp for college students hosted by SWC. He is the founder and president of the 4M Minority Journalism Foundation, a revolutionary 501 non-profit that trains talented high school journalism students and helps them to pay for college.

His career stands as a testament to courage, tenacity, and the power of being unapologetically yourself. We are proud to honor his legacy and share his story with our graduating class, who are themselves preparing to break new ground and lead with purpose.

SWC is more than just an academic institution—it is a reflection of the people who walk its halls. It’s a home for families with deep cultural roots. A new beginning for those starting a second career. A launchpad for young minds seeking to change the world.
I encourage every member of our Jaguar family to take time this May to learn something new, connect with someone different, and express gratitude to those whose journeys have enriched our own. From the incredible traditions of our AANHPI communities to the enduring strength of our military veterans, we have so much to celebrate—and so much to be proud of.
