Metro Conference student-athletes named to spring sports all-section teams

The San Diego Hall of Champions has released its spring all-San Diego Section teams.

South County student-athletes honored in baseball include a pair of San Ysidro Cougars on the first team: junior catcher Conrado Diaz and senior outfielder Gilbert Suarez. Bonita Vista senior infielder Daniel Schneemann also was a first team selection.

Second team all-section picks included Otay Ranch senior pitcher Alex Tovalin, Bonita Vista senior pitcher Ricky Reynoso, Eastlake senior catcher Dean Nevarez and Eastlake senior infielder Angel Estrada.

Diaz, the Metro-South Bay League Player of the Year, led San Ysidro regulars with a .418 hitting average, 40 RBI and eight home runs while Suarez batted .412 with 34 RBI. The league champion Cougars went on to post a final 31-3 record as San Diego Section Division II champions.

Schneemann, the Metro-Mesa League Player of the Year, batted .349 with a team-leading 20 RBI to help pace the Barons (25-9) to a share of this year’s league championship and a berth in the Division I semifinals. Schneemann also went 6-3 on the mound with a 2.06 earned-run average.

Tovalin, the Metro-Mesa League Pitcher of the Year, finished the season with an 8-2 record, 1.31 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 64 innings. He hurled a no-hitter against Bonita Vista on May 19.

Reynoso went 10-2 on the hill with a 0.78 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 81 innings.

Nevarez and Estrada helped guide top-seeded Eastlake (26-7) to the Division II championship game, placing runner-up to Poway.

La Jolla senior pitcher Tim Holdgrafer was named the section’s player of the year while Christian’s Mike Mitchell earned recognition as the section’s coach of the year.

Holdgrafer went 10-1 with a 0.87 ERA in leading the Vikings to a runner-up finish in the Division II championship game.
Mitchell coached Christian (29-2) to this year’s Division III title.

All-section first team softball honorees included Mater Dei Catholic junior pitcher Kellie White and Bonita Vista senior outfielder Aaliyah Jordan. Olympian junior Justine Federe was an all-section second team pick.

White, the Metro-Mesa League Pitcher of the Year, compiled a 19-6 record, 1.17 ERA and 170 strikeouts in 161 innings to lead the Lady Crusaders(24-8-1) to the fourth round of the Open Division playoffs. She also batted .370 with 13 RBI.

Jordan, the Metro-Mesa League Player of the Year, turned in a standout season at the plate with a .486 hitting average, 21 RBI, 10 doubles, five triples and two home runs to help the Lady Barons (21-5-1) earn the No. 1 seed in the Open Division playoffs.

Bonita Vista and Mater Dei Catholic finished as Metro-Mesa League co-champions.

Federe batted .483 with 44 RBI, 13 doubles, five triples and five home runs to conclude a blockbuster season with the Division III champion Lady Eagles (19-10).
Poway senior pitcher Kourtney Shaw earned honors as the section’s player of the year while Poway’s Jim Bennet was named the section’s coach of the year. The second-seeded Lady Titans (25-6) emerged as 2015 Open Division champions with a 1-0 victory over sixth-seeded Cathedral Catholic (27-8) in the title game.

Otay Ranch senior boys volleyball player Derek Gascon (724 assists) earned recognition on the all-section first team while Eastlake junior Patrick Sohacki was a second team all-section selection.

Otay Ranch (29-10) edged Eastlake (16-11) for this year’s Metro-Mesa League championship. Otay Ranch earned the No. 6 seed in the Open Division playoffs while Eastlake received the No. 7 seed in the same field.

Eastlake senior boys lacrosse player Jordan Vicente, a two-time Mesa League player of the year, earned a berth on the all-section second team after helping lead the Titans (14-5) to their third consecutive league championship.

Athletes of the Year

Granite Hills High School senior Deajanae Harvey and Oceanside High School senior Jordan Miller were announced as 2014-15 San Diego Section Athletes of the Year at the ninth annual prep athletes award gala held June 13 at the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Harvey earned accolades as the section’s female athlete of the year while Miller received recognition as the section’s male athlete of the year. Both were two-sports standouts during the 2014-15 season: Harvey in girls basketball and track and field and Miller in football and track and field.

Harvey capped her four-year basketball career for the Lady Eagles by helping lead them to an appearance in the Division I semifinals. She received first team all-section honors during the winter sports season after averaging 15.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 6.3 steals per game.

She also utilized her speed and quickness in track and field by turning in the section’s top-qualifying marks for this year’s state meet in both the long and triple jumps. She posted season-best efforts in both events – 18-8 in the long jump and 39-0.75 in the triple jump – to win both events at the section finals.

Granite Hills, seeded ninth in the Division I field, proved overachievers in the girls basketball playoffs thanks to Harvey’s on-court leadership. The Lady Eagles recorded upset wins over eighth-seeded Ramona, 49-34, in the first round and top-seeded Poway, 37-34, in the second round before ending their season with a 74-69 loss to fourth-seeded Mount Miguel.

Mount Miguel would go on to place second to Horizon Christian in the division championship game.

Miller, an all-section first team defensive back who will continue his career at the University of Washington, capped his prep career by capturing two medals at the state track finals – fourth in the long jump (23-2.5) and sixth in the triple jump (47-4).

Miller previously posted top marks in the 100-meter dash (10.80) and triple jump (48-4) at the section finals. He was also a member of the Pirates’ state qualifying 4×100 team that placed second at the section finals.

He turned in his best long jump mark of 24-0.25 in the state prelims.

Oceanside finished 14-1 during the football season, defeating Helix, 20-13, in dramatic come-from-behind fashion in the section’s Open Division championship game and then advancing to the Division I state championship bowl game while recording a runner-up finish to state champion Folsom.

The 2014-15 all-academic athletes of the year and the coaches of the year were also announced at the awards gala.

El Cajon Valley High School boys basketball coach Marty Ellis and Serra High School field hockey coach Laurie Berger each were named coaches of the year while El Cajon Valley High School senior Matthew Shearin and Bishop’s School senior Abby Bertics received honors as the section’s top scholar-athletes.

Shearin received the top boys academic honor with a 4.644 weighted grade-point average. He will attend Dartmouth where he will play running back and slot receiver for the college’s football team.

Shearin scored four touchdowns in a 49-34 first-round playoff win over Horizon Christian in last fall’s Division IV section playoffs. He finished as one of the section’s rushing leaders with 1,527 yards and 18 touchdowns.

On the basketball court, Ellis helped guide the top-seeded Braves to the Division II section championship with a 61-49 victory against the second-seeded Valhalla Norsemen.

El Cajon Valley ended its season with a 25-7 record following a 46-33 loss to Corona Del Mar in the ensuing Southern California regional playoffs.
