Southwestern College will host L.A Pierce College in a non-divisional community college football game Saturday, Sept. 16. Kick-off is 6 p.m.

The host Jaguars are coming off their first win of the season — 49-7 last Saturday at Glendale College. The visitors dominated the game, leading 14-0 at halftime and stacking on 35 points in the second half. SWC led, 42-0, at one point in the game.

A pair of prep recruits from Christian High School provided dividends for the Jags. Adrian Petty scored on punt returns of 75 and 55 yards while Nick Sexton hauled in a 27-yard scoring pass.

Southwestern used four quarterbacks in the game.

Demonte Morris completed all four of his passing attempts for 109 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He tossed touchdown passes to Chris Mack (16 yards) and Sexton.

Joshua Cartwright completed four of 12 passing attempts for 49 yards and one touchdown — a 13-yarder to Justin Dottery.

Armani Jones-Sailor (4-of-6, 39 yards) and Jonathan Lindstrom (1-of-3, four yards) also saw action at the signal-caller position.

The Jaguars had 14 different players carry the ball, combining to roll up 208 net rushing yards. Camron Lewis scored on a 74-yard breakaway run while Max Makarov (10 carries, 33 yards) scored on a one-yard run.

Southwestern racked up 21 first downs to just five for Glendale and out-gained the Vaqueros 409-124 in total offense. The Japs also recorded two sacks on defense.

“Big win, everyone played, so all will be right in the world for a week,” SWC head coach Ed Carberry said.

L.A. Pierce (1-1) is coming off a 55-21 victory against L.A. Southwest. However, the Brahmas will be without head coach Jason Sabolic and defensive cooridnator Torry Hughes, both of whom were released for what athletic director Moriah Van Norman termed decorum violations following the team’s home opener.

Battle of Saintsmen to highlight SDSU-Stanford clash
The SDSU Aztecs will be playing in one of their biggest games in school history when they kick off Saturday’s prime time non-conference clash against the 19th-ranked Stanford Cardinal. Kick off is 7:30 p.m. at San Diego Stadium.

The game will feature a slew of local San Diego County high school products on both teams. Highlighting the matchup between area players will be the battle of Saintsmen: Frank Buncom IV for Stanford (1-1) and Tariq Thompson for SDSU (2-0). Both are recent graduates of St. Augustine High School and there should be extra incentive for both to excel in Saturday’s game.

“Frank and Tariq are both amazing players, leaders on the field and in the community,” Saints assistant coach Gary Osberg said. “Also, both possess extremely high football intelligence that allows them to innately process the variety of variables that are happening during a game.

“Frank has an amazing sense of anticipation that allows him to put himself between the receiver and the ball and to come out of coverage for crucial hits.

“Tariq has a tactical mind that allows him to understand how the whole coverage works in reining in the offensive assault and how to communicate the formation changes to make sure everyone in the secondary is on the same page.”

Buncom won two CIF San Diego Section championships with the Saints. He was among a half dozen South County Saintsmen in a 49-0 win over Mission Bay in 2013 at then Qualcomm Stadium. He also was involved in a dramatic 49-42 come-from-behind fashion win over Madison at Southwestern College in  2015.

Buncom racked up 795 total yards during his three-year varsity career, including 783 receiving yards.

Thompson played three varsity seasons (2014-16), amassing 1,167 receiving yards.

Buncom, listed second on the Stanford depth chart at safety, entered Saturday’s game with six tackles. Thompson had seven tackles, including one for a loss, and one interception in SDSU’s opening two games.

Another battle of Saintsmen will occur later this season — Saturday, Sept. 23 — when Stanford (Buncom) and UCLA (Michael Alves) clash in a Pac-12 contest.

SDSU is coming off a highly meaningful 30-20 win at Arizona State University last Saturday while Stanford lost, 42-27, to fourth-ranked USC.

Aztec senior running back Rashaad Penny earned honors as the Walter Camp National FBS Offensive Player of the Week after collecting a career-high 216 rushing yards and a touchdown while also scoring on a 99-yard kick return and adding 38 receiving yards and a touchdown. Penny amassed 353 all-purpose yards in the win over ASU — the most this season in a FBS game.

Junior defensive lineman Noble Hall earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors for SDSU after recording single-game highs with five tackles (four unassisted), 1.5 sacks for 13 yards, 2.5 tackles for losses of 20 yards and two forced fumbles.

Buncom’s name should be familiar; he is the grandson of former Charger Ring of Honor inductee Frank Buncom Jr. who played from 1962-67 during the team’s days in the American Football League and was a three-time AFL All-Star selection.

San Diego Stadium opened during Buncom’s final season with the Chargers, thus creating some family history with Buncom, the grandson, also playing on the same field as Buncom, the grandfather, both as a high school and now college player.

Senior linebacker/tight end Ike Hall is a current Saintsman who remains inspired by his former teammates.

“I went to school with both of them, we were on the same team,” said Hall who played in Friday’s 19-14 come-from-behind non-league win at Otay Ranch High School. “As a freshman and sophomore, I looked up to them. Now seeing them play at this level has helped influence me in deciding where to commit.”

Through four games, Hall, who has yet to make a formal commitment to playing at the next level, has made 15 tackles and recorded two sacks. The Saints improved to 2-2 following the win over the Mustangs (2-2).

Senior J.R. Justice had a big night in the win over Otay Ranch with six catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner. He has caught four touchdown passes to date this season.

St. Augustine head coach Richard Sanchez, an alumnus of Sweetwater High School in National City, refereed to the win both as “ugly” but “pretty” in the same sentence.

The Saints host third-ranked Helix (2-1) in their next game on Friday, Sept. 22

Extra points
Saintsmen have squared off on the gridrion at the FCS/Division II/NAIA level. Last season, Jordan Brooks (2016) of Mexico’s UDLAP lined up against St. Augustine alumnus K.J. Mahoney (2014), playing for the University of San Diego, in a midseason exhibition game. Also last season, Patrick Dixon (2013) squared off against former Saintsman Andrew Heffler (2016) when Claremont-Mudd faced off against Pomona-Pitzer.
