Inclement weather washes out three days of roller hockey play

When you are dealing with an outdoor rink, inclement weather is not a good thing to have on the horizon – or overhead, for that matter.

Rain has postponed games at the Castle Park High School roller rink three times in four days so far this week and more wet stuff was forecast for Friday before the latest storm eased off.

Three games were played Tuesday as student-athletes returned to the court following a lengthy winter holiday break.

All three contests were non-league match-ups.

Three more games were played Friday evening, including a pair of South Bay League contests.

In games on Tuesday:

Defending South Bay League champion Chula Vista rolled past Bonita Vista by a score of 7-2 while Eastlake blanked Southwest 13-0. In the triple-header nightcap, Hilltop posted an impressive 5-2 win over west side rival Castle Park.

The Hilltop-Castle Park game featured teams restocked with players.

“We have 18 players – 12 of them freshmen,” Hilltop head coach George Godinez explained. “Everyone is learning. We will continue to improve. We’re skating better and our passing has definitely improved. One thing we haven’t mastered yet is communication.”

The Lancers (2-2) definitely turned in their best game to date in besting the Trojans (2-4). Hilltop sped to a 5-0 lead before Castle Park closed out scoring with two goals in the final period.

Trevor Fune led Hilltop with two goals while Kristen Lambertson, Danny Godinez and Caleb Macias each scored once in support of winning goaltender Victor Guzman.

Eleazar Cruz scored both goals for the Trojans.

Eastlake improved its season record to 4-1 after defeating Southwest, which saw its record dip to 0-5.

Freshman Braden Mayer collected five points on two goals and three assists to increase his team leading totals to 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points. Will Hamilton added four points on three goals and one assist, Sean Layton picked up a hat trick and Jake Powell contributed one goal and two assists.

Layton (12 goals) and Powell (seven goals, five assists) are tied for second in team scoring with 12 points each.

Aryn Gregory received credit for the shutout.

Eastlake led 5-0 after the first period and 9-0 after the second period.

Meanwhile, Chula Vista extended its season record to 6-0 following the win over Bonita Vista, which dropped to 1-4.

Hector Garcia had a hand in all seven Spartan goals with six goals and one assist while Allison Smith chipped in with one goal and two assists.

The Barons scored once in the first period on a goal by Nick Stark and once in the third period on a goal by Matthew Custodio.

Garcia upped his season scoring total to 26 goals and four assists following Tuesday’s scoring outburst.

In games on Friday:

Sweetwater defeated Mar Vista, 11-3, to improve to 3-0 in South Bay League play, 4-1 overall, while Eastlake skated past Castle Park, 13-0, in a non-league game to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Chula Vista kept its record perfect on the season – 7-0 – by defeating Southwest, 8-2, in South Bay League play.

The Spartans remain on top of the South Bay League standings with a 5-0 league record.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t seen too many of the Mesa League teams due to rainouts but we’re in a bracket with some of them for this weekend’s tournament (Pam Wiser Classic),” CVHS coach Matt Diaz explained. “I feel pretty good. It’s a prideful thing that the tournament is dedicated to my former coach. Hopefully, we can get to the finals again.”

Garcia is certainly spreading around a lot of personal and school pride after collecting seven goals in Friday’s game to catapult him into the scoring lead for the nine Sweetwater district teams with 33 goals and four assists.

Smith continued her rampage as the top scoring female in the district by adding one goal and two assists. She has tallied six goals and six assists this season.

Two female players scored both of Southwest’s goals: Jasmine Canonizado and Kayleigh Andrew. It was the first goal scored by Canonizado.

The Raiders looked smart in their new uniforms.

Sweetwater battled back from an early 1-0 deficit by reeling off seven unanswered goals.

Phillip Brandon led the Red Devils in scoring with four goals while teammate Adrian Kercher tallied three goals. Marco Salazar chipped in with two goals and one assist while Crisel Magyawi and Isabel Iniquez each scored one goal. Armando Rivera contributed two assists while Jesus Meza recorded one assist.

Iniguez found herself in unfamiliar territory in scoring her first career goal.

“I was really happy,” she explained. “I’ve been training for defender the last two years, but the coach said if I wanted to go up I could. I went up. It was a little different.”

Brandon paces Sweetwater in season scoring with 15 goals and one assist while Salazar has 10 goals and three assists and Kercher has 10 goals and one assist.

Ben Brown led Mar Vista with two goals and one assist; Jake Dilliott scored one goal for the Mariners while Alissa Mauchardt collected one assist.

Eastlake was bolstered by the play of Gregory between the pipes as she recorded her second consecutive shutout win. Powell moved into a tie for the team scoring lead by potting four goals and adding three assists for seven points.

He now has 11 goals and eight assists on the season for 19 points to tie freshman teammate Braden Mayer (12 goals, seven assists), who did not play in the game.

Hamilton remained productive with two goals and one assist in the win over the Trojans (2-5).
