The San Diego Stallions minor-professional football team will sport a 2-1 early season record when the team hosts the Desert Valley Knights on Saturday, Sept. 4, after defeating the Tri-County Titans, 27-12, in an away match-up last week.
Kick-off for Saturday’s contest against the Knights is 6 p.m. at Southwest High School.
“We fired on all cylinders,” said Stallions co-owner Ray Stewart in describing last week’s win over the Titans.
Defense was a key component in securing the victory as the Stallions recorded four sacks and made two interceptions.
On offense, quarterback Adam Ankers (Santana) continued a fine start to the 2010 LCFL season by completing 12 of 17 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns.
Jose Lawson led the Stallions with five tackles, two for losses and one sack while teamamte Ryan Cornell had four tackles, three for losses. Bryan Sprague made a team-high six tackles and recorded one sack while John Howard had two tackles, both for losses. David McClurg (Chula Vista) had three tackles, including one for a loss. Lanscarlo Collins (Chula Vista) and Dwight Scorza (three tackles, two for losses) each registered one sack.
Spencer Herron and Leo Camarena each made one interception in the game while Dominique Williams (Monte Vista) tacked on four tackles and Robert Garcia had three tackles.
Zack James caught four passes for 59 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown reception while Travis Thomas made four catches for 50 yards, including one that went for a 30-yard TD.
Daniel White completed the scoring for the Stallions with a 62-yard punt return.
Tim Parker (Eastlake) booted all three PAT conversions while also cbooming five punts for 240 yards. Parker’s lognest punt in the game went for 55 yards. He also had one carry for six yards.
Derrek Sykes (Monte Vista) led the Stallions with 56 rushing yards on five carries while Andrew Follins had six carries for 25 yards. Follins scored on a four-yard run.
Romero Crawford (Chula Vista) had two carries for five yards while Ramell Watts carried the ball once for four yards.
Andrew Ellison had one pass reception for 17 yards while Ankers had four carries for 10 yards from his QB position.
In three games, Ankers has thrown for 515 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions. Thomas leads the team with 200 receiving yards on eight catches while James has 14 receptions for 141 yards. Thomas has two touchdowns to his credit.
Sykes leads the Stallions with 74 rushing yards while Follins has rushed 14 times for 53 yards and two TDs.
Defensive leaders include Garcia with 14 tackles, Lawson and McClurg with 13 tackles each and Scorza with 10 stops. Scorza and McClurg each had registered five tackles for losses. Collins leads the team with three sacks.
White is averaging 28.6 yards on five kick-off returns and 31.4 yards on seven punt returns.
Parker is averaging 41 yards per punt, with a longest this season of 62 yards. He has converted on eight of nine PAT conversions and kicked a 15-yard field goal.
Scorza and Garcia each have safeties to their credit this season after recording a sack and blocked punt in a 24-4 loss to the LCFL national champion North County Cobras in a game two weeks ago at Rancho Buena Vista High School.
