The battle lines appear to be clearly drawn for the Metro Conference/Pacific League’s inaugural season: the Olympian Eagles versus the Montgomery Aztecs. The two former South Bay League squads met up in last Saturday’s championship game of the Spartan Invitational Passing Tournament, with the Eagles recording a spirited 19-12 victory in the seven-on-seven format.
“It helps us,” Olympian coach Gil Warren said. “It looks like we might be able to pass the ball to go with our primary running game.”
Nick Castro, Andre Snowden and Randy Jones each scored touchdowns for the Eagles from downfield aerials courtesy of quarterback Cobrin Humphrey.
Diego Rodriguez scored both Montgomery touchdowns on passes from Jordan Lippman.
“Those 19 points were the first points we gave up all day,” Aztec head coach Julio Alcala said. “I liked the competition. These guys were getting after each other. I’m already looking forward to the fall games.”
In the third-place game, Francis Parker, bolstered by a half-dozen South County athletes, edged Bonita Vista 22-19.
CV head coach Judd Rachow said the event has been going on for about 12 years. “We do this as a low-key tournament, self-policing,” he said. “It’s turned into more of a South County thing the past few years.”
