It will be a brave new world for San Diego Section’s boys and girls lacrosse teams over the next week as they fill out brackets for two divisional playoff tournaments. Previously, the section had contested post-season play in a single division.
The “expanded” format features two eight-team playoff brackets for both genders. The number of teams remains the same from the single division format but schools are now placed in specific enrollment divisions, so there could be a few surprises — and disappointments — as schools try to make the playoff “fit.”
League champions are guaranteed entry into the playoffs. Metro Conference champion Otay Ranch (11-0 in league, 12-7 overall) is guaranteed a berth in the Division I boys field as a league champion. Otay Ranch (10-0 in league play, 14-3 overall) will also compete in the Division I girls field.
Quarterfinal games are Saturday, May 14, followed by semifinals on Wednesday, May 18, and finals on Saturday, May 21, at Westview High School (two girls and two boys games).
The section seeding meeting is Thursday (May 12).
