Bonita Vista lady spikers have not disappointed with an 18-2 start

Heading into this weekend’s ASICS California Challenge tournament, the Bonita Vista High School girls volleyball team has lived up to its preseason billing with an 18-2 overall record. The Barons are 4-0 in Mesa League play awaiting a match-up with arch rival Eastlake on Monday, Oct. 17, in the Titans’ gym.

Bonita Vista and Eastlake shared last year’s league championship.

The Barons have swept each of their four league games thus far by identical 3-0 scores. Bonita Vista topped host Olympian 25-12, 25-7, 25-5 on Wednesday. Allie Loitz led the Barons with 11 kills while Jenelle Hudson and Meagan Wright each had 10 kills and Taimane Napoleon had 22 assists.

For the season, Hudson leads the team with 195 kills,followed by Loitz with 162 kills and Wright with 145 kills. Heather Gearhart leads the team with 289 digs while Hudson and Wright rank in a tie for second on the team with 113 digs.

Hudson leads the team with 226 assists — just three more than Napoleon. Hudson also leads the team with 38 aces.

Gearhart earned honors as the MVP of the recent La Jolla Bay City Invitational in which the Barons went 6-1 with victories against University City, Tucson Rincon, Patrick Henry, Canyon Crest Academy, Scripps Ranch and Santa Fe Christian and a loss to Cathedral Catholic.

Bontia Vista opened the season with a 4-1 showing in the San Diego Fall Classic, with a lone loss to La Jolal Country Day.

The Barons recorded a key 3-0 sweep of Rancho Bernardo on Sept. 29, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-8, 25-20 in the Broncos’ gym.

Bonita Vista tops the section’s Division II standings, followed by La Costa Canyon (12-4), Southwest El Centro (16-5-1), Westview (9-3), Serra (14-5), West Hills (14-6), Canyon Crest (15-7), Valhalla (11-7) and Point Loma (14-10).

The Barons are tied for the seventh best winning percentage in their division in the state (and for those who are interested, moved up five spots in the MaxPreps poll to #140 nationally).

Eastlake is coming off a 3-0 sweep at Mater Dei Catholic following a 2-2 showing at the Hilltop tournament on Oct. 8. The Titans defeated the Crusaders 25-16, 25-21, 25-19 in a hotly contested series of games.

At the Hilltop tournament, Eastlake defeated Oceanside, Temecula Prep while dropping matches to Mission Hills and Westlake.

The Titans are having a successful season thus far with a 15-8 overall record. Eastlake enters Monday’s high velocity encounter against Bonita Vista with a 3-0 league record.

The Titans have the seventh-best winning percentage among Division I teams, trailing Rancho Buena Vista (17-4) and Patrick Henry (17-6), Torrey Pines (11-4) and Fallbrook (14-6), Scripps Ranch (14-7) and San Diego (6-3).
