On to the quarterfinals

After defeating Palmeiras of Brazil 2-1 in Pacaembu stadium Tuesday night, the Tijuana Xolos can consider themselves among the eight best teams in the Americas.

The second-leg of the Copa Libertadores match was a far cry from the teams’ first encounter in Tijuana two weeks ago. In that game Palmeiras goalkeeper Bruno was credited with keeping the score 0-0, making one fantastic save after another. Bruno’s form, however, would not follow him home.

In the 26th minute the Xolos Duvier Riascos sent a rudimentary shot at the Brazilin goal however the goalkeeper misjudged the ball and found himself on the downside of a 1-0 deficit.

In the second half Fernando Arce sent a rocket into the home team’s net and with the score 2-0, the Xolos appeared ready to cruise to victory.

But Palmeiras would not go away quietly and in the 60th minute Souza would convert a penalty kick, making the score 2-1.

As time ran out the score was unchanged but six players on the Tijuana side found themselves carrying yellow cards, while Pablo Aguilar had been ejected altogether.

While neither side is playing in their respective league’s playoff tournament, the Xolos at least move on to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores championship series where they will play Atletico Mineiro.
