Pawn shop deal lands man in prison Neal Putnam | Sat, Dec 03 2011 12:00 PM

A 21-year-old South Bay bank robber was sentenced Nov. 18 to 150 years to life in prison plus 30 years consecutively and ordered to pay $18,572 in restitution.

Tykeem DeShawn Nelson received credits for one year and five months already spent in jail, but his lengthy sentence means he will likely never leave prison. San Diego Superior Court Judge Joan Weber also fined him $262.

A jury convicted Nelson on Aug. 18 of robbing the Chase Bank on East Plaza Boulevard in National City on June 15, 2010, and the U.S. Bank on H Street in Chula Vista three days later. They also convicted him of robbing an adult bookstore, two other banks and an attempted bank robbery in San Diego.

Nelson is a third strike defendant because he was convicted of robbery and attempted robbery in 2009. He was sentenced to 25 years to life consecutively for each conviction.

Nelson was arrested June 21, 2010, by law enforcement as he returned to his vehicle on East Plaza Boulevard.
