October hearing for flight risk

A preliminary hearing has been set for Oct. 18 for a cold case homicide that occurred in 2006 when a Chula Vista man was shot to death in a bar on Hollister Street in the South Bay.

Willie Clarke Jr. was killed at the La Vuelta bar at 768 Hollister St. on April 3, 2006. Guillermo Nunez Gonzalez, now 42, pleaded not guilty to his murder in Chula Vista Superior Court.

There was some type of disagreement and another man was beaten with a gun in the same incident. Other patrons of the bar were also assaulted. The site is no longer a bar and some other type of business occupies the area.

Deputy District Attorney Victor Ou said Aug. 2 that a warrant for Gonzalez’s arrest was issued at the time, but he fled to Mexico. Gonzalez was arrested by Mexican authorities and was handed over May 27 to members of the U.S. marshals and San Diego Fugitive Task Force.

Judge Dwayne Moring declined to set any bail for Gonzalez, considering he is a flight risk and was a fugitive for 10 years. Gonzalez is also charged with attempted murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility.
