21 year old gets lengthy sentence

A gunman who was convicted of trying to murder two people in separate carjacking incidents in National City and Imperial Beach was sentenced April 4 to 63 years and eight months in prison plus 65 years to life.

Deputy District Attorney Dave Grapilon said Treviyon DeShawn Rew, 21, will have to serve the specified sentence of 63 years, eight months first before he would start the indeterminate sentence of 65 years to life which runs consecutively.

Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Ana Espana set a restitution hearing for April 15 to determine if Rew will have to pay damages to any of his victims that have not been compensated by insurance or the victim’s crime compensation fund. He’s expected to be ordered to pay at least $5,000.

A jury convicted Rew in December 2013 of attempted murder and carjacking of Sean Simpson, then 26, on July 22, 2010, at his National City home on his birthday. Rew and another person, who has yet to be identified, shot Simpson nine times. He was in a coma for several weeks.

Simpson had just come home around 1:10 a.m. when he was approached in the parking lot of his gated apartment.

He was shot and Rew and the other man took his 2004 Toyota Corolla.

Grapilon said doctors left some of the bullets inside Simpson’s body near his spine because it was apparently too dangerous to try and remove them.

Rew, who lived with his grandfather on 39th Street in San Diego, was able to post bond after he was ordered to stand trial on the charges involving Simpson. He then went on a new crime spree months later.

A jury convicted Rew of a second attempted murder and attempted carjacking for a May 4, 2011, incident in Imperial Beach in which he fired a gun and had a 90-minute standoff with law enforcement officers.

Grapilon said Rew received many consecutive terms of 25 years for using a gun in a crime of violence and more years added for the use of benefitting a criminal street gang. Rew was also convicted of evading police, committing great bodily injury, and possession of a concealed firearm.

Espana gave him credits of 1,320 days of actual jail time plus 198 days of good conduct credits.

The jury deadlocked on robbery charges involving three women in their 20s from Ireland who were staying in Ocean Beach while on vacation. This incident occurred after Simpson was shot in 2010.
