Beer thief admits shooting

A Chula Vista man who fired a shot at a Walgreens employee who was pursing him after he stole two packs of beer pleaded guilty March 23 to robbery and using a gun in the incident.
Probation is ruled out for Cristian Nokolas Olmos, 19, said Deputy District Attorney Joel Madero.

Madero said Olmos faces a state prison ranging from five to seven years. Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Patricia Garcia set sentencing for May 9.

On Oct. 13, 2017, an employee at the Walgreens store began running at 8:18 a.m. after Olmos who took an 18-pack and a 12-pack of beer without paying for them. Olmos dropped the beer, but an employee continued to follow him through the parking lot. Olmos pulled a gun and fired once.

The employee wasn’t hit, and the shooting at 1430 Eastlake Parkway was reported to Chula Vista Police. They arrested him, and discovered Olmos was in possession of a handgun that was stolen in a residential burglary in the 1300 block of Santa Rita in Chula Vista, according to police.

Olmos was also charged with burglary, but that charge was dismissed in the plea agreement on Friday.

He remains free on $120,000 bond on condition of his attendance at self-help meetings and a device that measures any blood/alcohol levels, according to court records.
