Southwestern College’s men and women’s soccer teams hosted season openers this past week. Both teams came out victorious.
The SWC women defeated visiting Fullerton, 6-2, last Friday while the SWC men shut out Cypress, 2-0, on Tuesday.
Ladies first
Southwestern thrilled the home crowd with its first goal just two minutes into the match scored by Kaileya Magno and assisted by Daimel Patino. The Lady Jaguars led 4-0 by halftime on additional goals by Vianey Romo (assisted by Patino) at 10:30, Sophia Neri (assisted by Emily Keeley) at 19:30 and Melany Perez (unassisted) at 35:00.
The teams played to a 2-2 standoff in the second half. Southwestern took a commanding 6-0 lead on two goals by Rebecca Perez at 46:00 and 55:17 with both assists credited to Neri.
Fullerton finally broke through on the scoreboard with two late goals. Edie Pfefferkorn made it a 6-1 contest in the 74th minute with an unassisted goal; Hayden Davis competed scoring in the two-hour match at 82:00, assisted by Pfefferkorn.
The Lady Jags dominated with 24 shots and nine cornerkicks. SWC goalkeepers Samantha Gudino and Alina Aparicio combined for six saves, including four by Aparicio in 75 minutes. Gudino was credited with two saves in 15:00. Fullerton’s Noelani Sanchez made five saves on 11 shots faced.
Neri led the SWC scoring parade with one goal and two assists. Rebecca Perez logged two goals while Patino had two assists.
The Lady Jaguars next ventured to Mt. San Jacinto College for a 2-2 tie on Tuesday. Southwestern initially faced a 2-0 deficit on goals by the Lady Eagles early in the second half: Eileen Vargas (46:00) and Jalyssa Arias (48:00, assisted by Alyssa Salazar). The visitors rallied on goals very late in the match by Sophia Neri (unassisted) at 89:00 and Aubrey Thomas (assisted by Melany Perez) at 90:00.
Southwestern out-shot Mt. San Jacinto 15-10, including an 7-2 edge in the first half. The Lady Eagles scored on both their shots in the first half to take the early lead.
Both goalkeepers (Aparicio for SWC and Kimberly Estrada for MSJ) were each credited with four saves.
SWC (1-0-1) will host San Bernardino Valley on Friday at 6 p.m. in a bid to keep its unbeaten start intact. Additional home matches follow Sept. 8 (Chaffey), Sept. 11 (Imperial Valley) and Sept. 15 (San Diego City), all at 3 p.m.
On the prowl
The SWC men received goals from Luis Ernesto Navarro and Esteban Gonzalez in its season opening win.
The Jags host Orange Coast College at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.

SDSU men and women’s soccer teams post pair of 1-1 draws on the road
After a 14-goal barrage against Life Pacific and University of Pacific in home matches Aug. 27, San Diego State’s men and women’s soccer teams returned to less lofty heights with a pair of 1-1 draws on the road (men on Sunday at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and women on Thursday at Oklahoma State).
Both teams recorded key results to pad their early season records. The SDSU women improved to 3-1-1 while the Aztec men extended their record to 1-1-2 (1-0-2 in their last three matches).
Thursday’s women’s match opened with a lot of action. Alexyz Nakamoto put a shot on goal less than three minutes into the match, but it was saved by Oklahoma State goalkeeper Avery Bass. Two seconds into the 14th minute, the host Cowgirls were awarded a penalty kick. Sonora De Fini was in a good position to give Oklahoma State the lead. However, SDSU goalkeeper Kailey Carlen dove to her right and made the save to keep the match scoreless.
Three minutes laetr, Nakamoto passed to Naima Castro, who broke away from her defender and fired a shot past Bass to give the Lady Aztecs a 1-0 advantage.
Oklahoma State’s Victoria Madison was given a yellow card in the 24th minute. A minute later, Bass saved a nice shot attempt by Lily Boudet. Just past the 30-minute mark Carlen had her second save of the night on a shot by Laudan Wilson. Nakamoto kept up the pressure on Bass, forcing her to make another save at the 36-minute mark and the Aztecs took their 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Kana Smith was issued a yellow card at 52:44, the first of five given to the Aztecs over the final 37:16 of the match. The SDSU bench received yellow cards at 57:13 and 85:52. Kenny Moore had one at 64:05 and Victoria Miller picked up a yellow at 71:19. For the Cowgirls, Keaton Mitchell got a yellow card at 86:43.
Oklahoma State tied the match in the 75th minute on a penalty kick goal by Addy Lang. The hosts nearly took the lead in the 84th minute on a ball that deflected off the crossbar but did not cross the plane. Late in the 86th minute, SDSU looked to pull ahead on a goal by Moore, but the referees signaled for offsides. A replay review did not have enough evidence to overturn the call and the match finished in a draw, 1-1.
The Aztecs finished the match with more shots (14-12), shots on goal (4-3) and corner kicks (6-2). The Cowgirls had more fouls (18-16) and saves (3-2). SDSU possessed the ball for longer (56 percent to 44 percent).
Nakamoto picked up her third assist of the season, taking the team lead and setting a new career high.
San Diego State has allowed just two goals in its five matches this season. Both came on penalty kicks.
The Lady Aztecs will head to Lubbock, Texas, for a match at Texas Tech on Sunday, Sept.6, at 5 p.m. PT. Next week, SDSU will play at Utah Valley on Sept.12 at 6 p.m. PT. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+ to paid subscribers.
In the men’s match, SDSU and Cal Poly were locked in a scoreless duel for the first 85 minutes before each team scored within a 36 second span.
The Mustangs out-shot the Aztecs 16-6 but only held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. SDSU goalkeeper Nic Diana made a season-high five saves, including a match-saving one in the 89th minute.
The Aztecs’ goal came in the 85th minute following a Gio Aguirre cross from the right wing that Nik Orth headed in. It was the third assist for Aguirre, who had just entered the match, in the last two matches as well as the third goal for Orth in the
Aguirre, a freshman, had dished off the assist just 17 seconds after he entered the match.
“It stings that we couldn’t close out another game that we had the lead late again,” SDSU head coach Ryan Hopkins said after the match. “It’s something we need to focus on and understand the importance of playing every play and putting in an entire 90-minute performance.”
Cal Poly scored shortly after Orth’s goal, also on a header, with Devin Bening putting home the Colin Pearce cross.
The Mustangs had two more opportunities in the final 65 seconds that SDSU was able to turn away. The first required a diving save by Diana and the other came on a blocked pass to an open Mustang in the box by Mattia Boldrini.
Cal Poly also had a good look in the 79th minute following a Diana deflected save that bounced right to a Mustang, but his shot sailed off target.
SDSU’s best chance came in the 70th minute when Dylan Presto was attacking from the right wing before shooting over the crossbar.
This was the first of two meetings between SDSU and Cal Poly. The teams will play again in 36 days at SDSU in a Pac-12 fixture.
The SDSU men host Cal State Bakersfield Saturday at 7 p.m.
The SDSU men opened the Aug. 27 double-header at the SDS Sports Deck with a 7-1 defeat of Life Pacific on an unusually warm afternoon and the Lady Aztecs followed with a 7-0 victory against the University of the Pacific.
NWSL report: Wave completes undefeated homestand with comeback 3-2 win
San Diego Wave FC Races Past Louisville FC at Snapdragon Stadium
The San Diego Wave FC completed an undefeated three-game homestand (two wins, one tie) with a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win over Racing Louisville last Friday in front of a crowd of 12,220 at Snapdragon Stadium.
The Wave (12-7-3) continues to sit in the upper end of the playoff race with 39 points — good for a tie for third among the league’s eight playoff qualifiers. It gets a bit better as the Wave, tied with the Utah Royals (also 12-7-3), is just one point out of second place.
Defending NWSL champion Gotham FC continues to top the 16-team table with it 13-3-6 record and 45 standings points — five points ahead of the Washington Spirit (12-6-4, 40 points) abnd six points ahead of both the Wave and Royals.
On the downside, the Wave sits just one point ahead of the fifth place Portland Thorns (11-6-5, 38 points). The North Carolina Courage (11-8-3, 36 points) trails San Diego by three points. The Kansas City Current (10-8-4) is two points behind the Courage in seventh place. The Seattle Reign (9-8-4) continues to hold down the final playoff spot in eighth place with 31 points — two standings points ahead of the ninth place Angel City (8-5-8, 29 points).
The final order of finish is still too early to predict with eight games remaining in regular season play. It definitely gets more interesting with each passing week.
The Wave erased a two-goal deficit with a determined second-half response against Racing Louisville FC, turning the match on its head after trailing early at Snapdragon Stadium.
Louisville took control with two goals in the opening 23 minutes, as Lauren Milliet opened the scoring before Taylor Flint doubled the advantage from a set piece. The Wave began to settle as the half went on, with Mimi Van Zanten and Trinity Byars creating some danger opportunities and San Diego generating sustained pressure in the Louisville box before the break.
That pressure carried straight into the second half. Just two minutes after the restart, Byars drove forward and buried a low finish into the bottom-left corner to cut the deficit to 2-1 and spark the comeback.
From there, San Diego continued to build momentum. Kimmy Ascanio nearly found the equalizer in the 52nd minute, Byars rattled the crossbar from distance in the 65th, and Ludmila curled an effort just wide moments later as the Wave kept Louisville pinned back.
The breakthrough finally came in the 74th minute. Ludmila’s effort from a set piece was blocked, and Byars reacted first to poke home the rebound for her second goal of the night, completing back-to-back braces and bringing San Diego level at 2-2.
San Diego completed the comeback in the closing stages when captain Kenza Dali, who returned from injury and came on as a 63rd-minute substitute, scored the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute, sealing a 3-2 victory after the Wave had trailed by two goals in the first half.
The result capped an unbeaten three-game home stretch at Snapdragon Stadium for San Diego, with the Wave going 2-0-1 and scoring eight goals across the three matches.
Next on the schedule: San Diego Wave FC travels to face Seattle Reign FC at Lumen Field on Sunday, Sept. 6. The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
