Chula Vista has secured $500,000 from the State of California to support affordable housing, which the city will match with another $500,000 from its local housing trust fund, bringing the total to $1 million for new projects.
The local trust fund was created in 2024, and this combined funding marks one of the City’s first major investments through the program.
The money will be awarded to a qualifying project through a competitive process, with applications evaluated on factors such as location, developer experience, and the level of affordability. A Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) is currently open and will close on January 15, 2026. Interested developers can find details on the City’s procurement portal, Planet Bids.
City Manager Tiffany Allen said the funding represents more than just dollars.
“This award shows the city’s ongoing effort to expand the supply of affordable housing,” she said. “Combined with other available funding, we’ll have another $4 million to invest in the community in the new year.”
State officials stressed the importance of collaboration with local governments. HCD Director Gustavo Velasquez said, “These awards highlight how the state works with cities like Chula Vista to make housing more accessible and ensure all Californians have a place to call home.”
The city has not yet announced which project will receive the funds, but the selection process is expected to prioritize proposals that maximize affordability and community impact. The investment underscores Chula Vista’s continued focus on addressing housing needs while providing a clear pathway for developers ready to take part in building the city’s next generation of affordable homes.
