The Eastlake Titans opened defense of their Metro-Mesa League title with a 14-1 win over the arch-rival Bonita Vista Barons on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at the Castle Park High School outdoor rink.

Freshman Jacob Fox continued his hot hand into his debut season with nine points on four goals and five assists to lead the Eastlake juggernaut. Senior Chris Rollbusch Jr. was next on the scoresheet with eight points on six goals and two assists.

Three players each picked up three points: senior Kaden Thomasin (two goals, one assist), senior Ryan Resano (one goal, two assists) and sophomore Desi Garcia (one goal, two assists). Srnior Nichoas Battillo logged two assists.

Aaron Odvina scored the Barons’ lone goal.

The Titans improved to 6-0 on the season, including a 1-0 mark in league play.

TITANS DOUBLE LEAGUE RECORD TO 2-0 WITH 16-0 WIN OVER MUSTANGS
Frosh phenom Jacob Fox broke his own single-game scoring record with 11 points on eight goals and three assists while senior team captain Chris Rollbusch Jr. racked up nine points on seven goals and two assists to keep the Eastlake Titans undefeated in Metro-Mesa League play at 2-0 with a 16-0 win over the Otay Ranch Mustangs on Thursday at the Castle Park High School outdoor rink.

The Titans (7-0) have outscored their opening two league rivals 30-1 in skating to the top of the standings.

On a cold night, Eastlake wasted little time warming up its game by scoring off the opening face-off and roaring to a 10-0 first-period lead. The Titans led 14-0 through two periods.

Senior Kaden Thomasin picked up a goal and assist int he game while senior Nicholas Battillo racked up three assists and sophomore Desi Garcia recorded two assists.

In seven games, Rollbusch and Fox each have logged 45 points on 30 goals and 15 assists for the team lead.

“I was expecting a different type of game,” EHS coach Chris Rollbusch Sr. said. “I know they were shorthanded. We had a couple people who were playing iron-man. I know that was a factor because of the winter break. Some kids were still on vaction with their families. It was the same in Wednesday’s game against Bonita Vista.”

Two games were played on Thursday. In the opening contest, Southwest and Mar Vista — Metro-South Bay League rivals — skated to a 1-1 overtime tie.

Esai Valera scored the game’s opening goal to lift the Raiders to a 1-0 lead But the Mariners tied the score on a goal by Raeden Owen, assisted by Fernando Corona.

The second period and third periods both proved scoreless with Southwest forced to kill four penalties to keep the teams knotted on the scoreboard. The overtime period featured a five-minute running clock and there was no further scoring.

Southwest (3-3-1 overall) faced off league play with a 5-1 loss to Hilltop on Wednesday to fall to 0-1-1 in league play. Mar Vista is 2-2-1 on the season.

Both the Raiders and Mariners displayed puck awareness on the playing court with split-second knowledge of what to do with the puck when gaining possession on turnovers. It’s a step forward in the maturing process.

“We have a lot of seniors on this year’s team, we are a senior-laden team,” Southwest coach Chris Alvarez said. “We have gained experience over the last three years playing as a group. I’d like to think that our win-loss record might reflect that, but even if it doesn’t, I’m proud of how these guys have progressed. We’ve been building.”

Richard Scarborough braced Mar Vista between the pipes while Marco Roque manned the cage for Southwest to keep the teams even on the scoreboard.
