Springtime animal walk to benefit Humane Society

The San Diego Humane Society’s annual Walk For Animals is set for May 6 at NTC Park in Liberty Station on May 6. Registration is now open, with early bird pricing available through March 31. There is also still sponsorship and vendor opportunities available.

San Diego Humane Society Director of Public Relations Nina Thompson said this is one of the SDHS’s biggest events of the year to fund raise for the animals that it cares for.

“About 40,000 animals come through our doors every single year,” she said. “That is companion animals and wildlife. Since June 2022, has been one of the toughest in the organizations history because we are so overwhelmed with dogs. This year, in particular, it is extremely important for our fundraising to take care of all of these dogs.”

Thompson said the Walk is a very fun morning event, with registration starting at 7 a.m., and ending at 11 a.m.

“There is a big band, a pancake breakfast, a warmup/stretch that you do with your animals, and a bunch of vendors because it is a very big park,” she said. “it’s a large walk with about 5,000 walkers plus their dogs who are dressed up in costumes. It is a very fun morning.”

Thompson said the Walk begins at 9 a.m., and there is a two-mile walk and a half-mile option for walkers.

“So, when they come back, there is plenty of time to enjoy the band, the vendors. We have adoptable dogs out there so if there is anyone out there looking for a dog, they could possibly meet their future companion,” she said. “People show up really early. They show up to hang out for the couple of hours before the walk gets underway. So really, it seems like the party is before the walk as well. They really enjoy the warm up/stretch and everyone gets really involved in it.”

Thompson said it has a fundraising goal of $320,000 and right now it is at about $25,000.

“The more people that sign up, the closer we get to that goal,” she said. “You can sign up as an individual or a team.”
