South County qualifies 15 teams for CIF girls volleyball playoffs

Fifteen South County teams qualified for this year’s San Diego Section girls volleyball playoffs.

Nine have advanced to the quarterfinal round.

In Tuesday’s opening round of the Division I playoffs:

  • Mesa League champion Eastlake (21-17) defeated 10th-seeded San Marcos (20-19) in a five-game thriller 20-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-18, 15-6. The seventh-seeded Titans play at second-seeded Ramona (22-10) in Friday’s quarterfinals.
  • Twelfth-seeded Otay Ranch (22-13) bowed out in three straight games to fifth-seeded Point Loma (17-15) by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-21.
  • Thirteenth-seeded Olympian (15-16) fell to fourth-seeded La Jolla Country Day (21-14) in four games 21-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-15.

In Tuesday’s opening round of the Division III playoffs:

  • Third-seeded Mater Dei Catholic (24-9) swept 14th-seeded Mira Mesa (11-16) by scores of 25-21, 25-12, 25-18. The Crusaders play at sixth-seeded San Pasqual (20-21) in Friday’s quarterfinals.
  • Seventh-seeded Montgomery (16-19) eliminated 10th-seeded Coronado (9-19) in four games to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals at second-seeded El Camino (27-9).

Fourth-seeded Southwest El Centro (26-11) eliminated 13th-seeded Mar Vista (11-17) in five games 26-24, 22-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-8.

Five local teams played in Wednesday’s opening round of the Division IV playoffs:

  • South Bay League champion Hilltop, seeded second, swept 15th-seeded Calipatria 25-7, 25-16, 25-17. The Lancers (27-7) host 10th-seeded High Tech High Chula Vista (16-10-1) in Saturday’s quarterfinals after the Bruins topped seventh-seeded Orange Glen (14-7) in three games in Wednesday’s opening round.
  • Fifth-seeded Ocean View Christian Academy (16-1) eliminated 12th-seeded Holtville (11-16) in four games 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-10 to advance to meet fourth-seeded Horizon Prep in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
  • Third-seeded West Shores (11-1) defeated 14th-seeded Castle Park (13-19) 25-17, 25-16, 25-16.
  • Top-seeded High Tech High San Diego (19-18) edged 16th-seeded Sweetwater (11-18) in five games 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 24-26, 15-8.

Four area teams qualified for the Division V playoffs, with Southwest (18-7) receiving the No. 1 seed and San Ysidro (14-12) receiving the No. 4 seed.

  • In a pair of quarterfinal match-ups on Saturday, Southwest will host eighth-seeded Bonsall (14-9) while San Ysidro will host fifth-seeded Monte Vista (16-11).
  • Tenth-seeded Bayfront Charter (13-12) upset seventh-seeded Calvary Christian Academy (12-15) in five games in Wednesday’s opening round match at San Diego Academy to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round at second-seeded O’Farrell Charter (14-17-1).

All quarterfinal games start at 5 p.m.
