Sandbags available

The City of National City is providing up to 10 free sandbags to residents who want to prevent damage from possible flooding caused by an anticipated tropical storm this weekend.

National City residents can retrieve the bags from the National City Fire Department, 343 E. 16th St.

Sand will be available for filling the bags at the Kimball parking lot on D Avenue, next to the Boys and Girls Club at 1415 D Ave.

Proof of National City residency is required and patrons must bring a shovel to fill the bags.

The city of Chula Vista is also providing sandbags at the Public Works facility, 1800 Maxwell Rd., today, Aug. 18.

Sandbags will also be available at Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Station, 4900 Bonita Road in Bonita.

The National Weather Service Friday morning issued a Tropical Storm Watch for parts of Southern California, including San Diego County.

According to the NWS, a Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions—high winds and heavy rainfall—are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

The tropical storm is expected to arrive in the county Saturday evening, with the brunt of the storm taking place Sunday through Monday.

The tropical storm is a result of Hurricane Hilary, which is currently a Category 4 hurricane off the coast of Baja California, Mexico and making its way north.
