Prep track & field season off to a start

HILLTOP LANCER GIRLS ARE OFF TO 4-0 MARK IN SOUTH BAY LEAGUE DUAL MEETS

The high school track and season is a month old without any invitationals and limited participation in dual meets. Not all events are filled in every dual meet.

The Hilltop Lancers are competing in the South Bay League and have had four dual meets to draw out some numbers. The girls squad is 4-0 while the boys team is 3-1.

Two sets of siblings have helped set the pace in the early stages of the season: juniors Jimmy and Nicole Byland (fraternal twins) and junior Noah Rosenberg and freshman Kayla Rosenberg.

All four have had an impact on their team’s strong start.

Jimmy Byland set a new course record on Hilltop’s new cross country course in each of the three races he logged, ending up with the final time of 16:00 on the 3.1-mile steep hill course.

“It’s really cool having made the course record on one of toughest courses,” Byland said.

So far in the track season, he’s run 4:28 in the 1600-meter distance and 9:58 in the 3200 distance. I’d like to have my best times of 4:20 in the mile (1600) and 9:20 in the two-mile (3200).”

Noah Rosenberg has gone undefeated so far in the 800 run with a top time of 2:07. He also competes in the 4×400 relay.

Nicole Byland was a standout on the school’s cross country like her brother and is now competing in the 1600 and 3200 events during the track season. “It’s been different because I’m working on my speed so far,” she said.

She’s gone 6:08 in the 1600 and 11:25 in the 3200 thus far this spring.

Kayla Rosenberg has shown the coaching staff what she has in the 100 and 200 sprints as well as the 4×400 relay.

This is her first competitive season in track and field. She’s won all her 200 races and three of four in the 100.

Top times include 13.90 in the 100 and 29.47 in the 200.

“I was a cross country manager,” she said. “This is my first year running track. It’s been really fun to do. It’s rewarding but a bit tiring.”

Bonita Vista has competed in a pair of Mesa League dual meets: April 22 at Sweetwater and April 29 at Eastlake.

The April 22 meet featured nine boys varsity running events and three field events while the girls half of the dual included eight running events and five field events. A typical dual meet would include 10 running events and six field events.

Bonita Vista captured first place finishes in nine of the 12 contested boys events and 10 of the 13 contested girls events.

Bonita Vista junior Jaden Rucker won the boys 200 dash (24.85) and 400 dash (57.37) while Sweetwater freshman Xzavier Crews captured first place in the boys 100 dash (11.66) and long jump (16-2) and second place in the 200 dash (25.63).

Other event winners for the Barons included freshman Ian Ridge in the 800 run (2:14.19), junior Pierce Manson in the 1600 run (4:43), junior Enrique Aranda in the 3200 (10:49.66), senior Brandon Tovar in the 300 intermediate hurdles (48.44), senior Joshua Tighe in the high jump (5-0) and senior Kyle Gregg in the pole vault (11-6).

“It felt good to win the race in the first track event,” said Manson, who moved up from the middle of the pack to emerge on top of the field. “I feel empowered knowing I have another year to get better.”

The boys 3200 came down to a footrace between teammates as Aranda overtook junior Maxwell Anderson in the final 10 meters to win by 0.31 second. Both runners set personal records in the race as did third-place finisher Jonathan Siegel (10:53.72), also from Bonita Vista.

Bonita Vista junior Anissa Blea won the girls 100 dash (12.88) and 200 dash (26.69) senior Jayleen Rivera recorded top marks in the shot put (31-3) and discus throw (84-5).

Other event winners for the visitors included freshman Amaira Alramadan in the 400 dash (1:18), freshman Paula Jimenez in the 800 run (2:48), junior Diandra Jara in the 1600 run (6:10) and senior Sequoia Kriss in the 3200 (12:17).

Sweetwater senior Amaris Martinez soared to victory in the high jump (4-4) and long jump (11-9) while junior teammate Alexis Wheat-Romero won the triple jump (27-8).

Sweetwater started the season with just eight student-athletes but added 10 more following the end of the football season. The football players have made major contributions to the boys squad.

“From the original kids I had before football ended, it wasn’t looking promising with mainly underclassmen with no experience,” SuHi coach Jaime Romero said. “Two senior girls helped to train them, and we picked up six players. Now we’re a small team. We feel we can compete.”
