Paradise Hills artist’s work now on display at National City Public Library

Paradise Hills resident Edward Juarez has a collection of artwork on display through April at the National City Public Library, 1401 National City Blvd., National City.

The four paintings on display are part of the library’s adult education outreach program.

Juarez, a longtime South County resident, said he discovered his artistic talent at age 8. He has worked in various media such as oils, drawing, charcoal, color pencils and pen and ink.

He is the father of Hilltop High School wrestling coach Thomas Juarez.

The elder Juarez attended Kimball Elementary School, National City Junior High School and Sweetwater High School while growing up. He was among the first class of students at Southwestern College when classes were held at Chula Vista High School.

He said his favorite subjects are still life, landscapes and sports, including wrestling and boxing.

“I do a lot of portraits on the spot,” Juarez explained.

The Paradise Hills resident said he is flattered about the current display of his paintings.

“It feels great,” he said. “I get a big bang out of it. You’re showing your talent. It’s something you like to do to the best of your ability.”

The elder Juarez said he enjoys drawing on the spot, including events that are occurring at the library and at wrestling tournaments he attends to support his son.

He said he often sketches referees during the tournaments and presents them free of charge to the subjects.

Library hours are 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and closed on Friday. For more information, call (619) 470-5800.
