Little League Baseball isn’t the only action in town going full swing this summer.

Pony Baseball and American Legion Baseball have also carved out a niche in the South County region.

It’s play ball and batter up regardless of which uniform logo one is wearing.

Southwest Region Pony Baseball’s allotment of summer championship tournaments include a new kid on the block: Eastlake Pony.

This is the second year for the fledgling South County league, which is currently fielding teams in the Shetland (6U), Pinto (8U), Mustang (10U) and Bronco (12U) divisions.

The league serves the area east of Interstate 805 in Chula Vista. The league’s home field is located at 545 E. Naples St.

League president Valerie Jauregui said approximately 90 players registered for the spring season.

“We have a pretty cool story,” she said.

Eastlake joins Chula Vista South, Chula Vista North and Paradise Hills as Pony programs serving the South County region.

League ages for the current season were based as of Aug. 30, 2017. Registration began last November.

A brief overview of divisions available in Pony Baseball:

The Pinto Division is for league aged children from 7 to 8 years old. This is a machine-pitch division with no leading off or stealing of bases. Six-year-olds are allowed to sign up to play in the Pinto Division. However, this is contingent on their assessment rating and space available.

The Mustang Division is comprised of league age 9- to 10- year olds and for most players, this is the first season of “real baseball” with live arm pitching, leading off and stealing bases.

The Bronco Division is comprised of league age 11-12 year olds. The size of the diamond increases to 70 feet between base paths and 48 feet for live pitching.

This assists players as they gradually increase their skills and strength in preparation for high-school competition that feature 90-foot diamonds and 60-foot pitching.

Older age divisions include Pony-13, Pony-14, Colt (16U) and Palomino (18U). There is also a Thoroughbred Division (23U).

Eastlake has teams entered in the Pinto-8, Mustang-9 and Mustang-10 and Bronco-12 sectional playoffs now under way.

Summer championship tournaments end in World Series at the Shetland, Pinto, Mustang, Bronco, Pony-13, Pony-14, Colt and Palomino levels.

International teams are involved in the Pinto and older age divisions.

The Shetland World Series is scheduled July 16-17 in Simi Valley.

The Pinto International Baseball Classic is scheduled July 19-21 in Mt. Vernon, Ill.

The Mustang-9 International World Series is scheduled July 27-20 in Walnut.

The Mustang-10 International World Series is scheduled Aug. 3-6 in Youngsville, La.

The Bronco-11 International World Series is scheduled July 27-30 in Chesterfield, Va.

The Bronco-12 International World Series is scheduled Aug. 3-6 in Los Alamitos.

The Pony-13 World Series is scheduled July 27-30 in Whittier.

The Pony-14 World Series is scheduled Aug. 10-15 in Washington, Pa.

The Colt World Series is scheduled Aug. 3-8 in Marion, Ill.

The Palomino World Series is scheduled later this summer in Laredo, Texas.
