Matricide suspect has July hearing

A Chula Vista man is being held without bail in the stabbing death of his mother.
The victim, Gloria San Miguel, 56, called 911 in her home near Otay Ranch around 7:15 p.m. in the 900 block of Merced River Road on April 20 after being attacked.

Chula Vista Police responded and found her son, Glen Weldon Hammitt, 29, outside in the driveway. He was holding a photo in a picture frame.

On Tuesday, Deputy District Attorney Mary Loeb said Hammitt is charged with murder and resisting an executive officer with great bodily injury. An officer was struck in the forehead with a picture frame, causing several cuts to his head.

Hammitt ran off, but police officers quickly took him into custody. San Miguel was rushed to a hospital where she later died.

In a video appearance last week, Hammitt pleaded not guilty before Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Enrique Camarena, who set a preliminary hearing for July 28. Hammitt has a readiness conference on July 7. The courts are expected to open on May 26 after being closed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

San Miguel previously lived in Bonita, according to her online obituary. Her son was apparently living with her at the time.

Hammitt remains in the central jail in downtown San Diego.
