The Mar Vista Mariners are 2-0 and looking good as the 2015 high school football season starts to jump into high gear. The Mariners doubled their win total on the season by defeating host Clairemont, 28-7, last Friday in a non-league encounter.

MVHS head coach Tyler Arciaga called the victory against the Chieftains “ a good win” for his team.

“Our defense played well and didn’t give up any points — their one score was on a kickoff return,” Arciaga said. “I thought we came out playing hard, but didn’t quite have the killer instinct to finish the game and completely take the wind out of Clairemont’s sails. They played hard and kept themselves in the game until the very end.”

Khalil Spruill rushed for 147 yards and one touchdown while quarterback Michael Wilson passed for a touchdown (to Alejandro Sosa) and rushed for one in as well. Wilson finished the game 6-of-12 for 62 yards with one TD and one interception while rushing eight times for 44 yards and one score.

Mar Vista rolled up 264 rushing yards in the game. Miguel Godinez (two carries, 35 yards) scored the Mariners’ other rushing TD. Xavier Williams was 4-for-4 on PAT conversions.

This week the Mariners travel to Las Vegas to play Durango High School in a non-league match-up.

“It will be interesting to see how our team responds to some weather adversity (temperatures are expected to be 100-plus at kickoff) and how they prepare on the road. I think it is a great experience for them to travel outside the county and see different places. They will take a tour of UNLV and see the Rebels play the UCLA Bruins at Sam Boyd Stadium.”

Spruill has rushed 40 times for a team-leading 363 yards and three touchdowns while Wilson is 9-of-18 for 100 passing yards
