The Bonita Vista Barons still haven’t cracked the San Diego Section’s top-10 football rankings, but they could be close. The Barons, off to a 2-0 start, face fifth-ranked Madison in a key away match-up Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Bonita Vista continued its impressive start by defeating host Imperial, 54-6, last Friday. The Barons rolled up 375 rushing yards and tacked on 137 passing yards for 512 total offensive yards in the non-league contest.
“I thought the team went out and did a nice job dealing with all the distractions of a game two hours away,” BVHS head coach Chris Thompson explained. “The heat last week should have us ready for this week. We’re stressing consistency in playing in high expectation games.”
Greg Bell rushed 16 times for 171 yards and scored three touchdowns while Chris Boguille rushed 14 times for 73 yards and scored two touchdowns. Josh Godfrey (four carries, 93 yards), Dennis Rosario (three carries, 17 yards) and Anthony Posada (one carry, 22 yards) each scored one rushing touchdown.
Godfrey ripped off one run for 75 yards while Bell’s longest carry from scrimmage went for 36 yards. Boguille also tacked on four PAT conversions to finish the game with 16 points.
Posada completed six of 13 passing attempts for 127 yards. Jake Rozar had three receptions for 90 yards, including one 36-yard catch.
Gabe Melhorn and Moli Faalogo each had one sack in the game while Faalogo and Fidencio Salas each had one fumble recovery to pace the Bonita Vista defense.
Bell leads the Barons with four touchdowns in two games while Boguille has two touchdowns and 10 kicking points.
Madison is 1-1 and is coming off a 48-21 non-league loss to second-ranked St. Augustine last Friday.
Otay Ranch drops 28-27 thriller to Foothillers on missed extra point
The Otay Ranch Mustangs proved they belong among the top echelon teams in the San Diego Section. Don’t be surprised to see the Mustangs pushing for a upper-tier seed in the Division II playoffs by season’s end.
Last Friday’s non-league game took Otay Ranch to Grossmont, a team with aspirations of its own for a top-half finish in the Division I standings. The Mustangs (1-1) battled back to take a 27-21 lead before falling, 28-27, on a late rally by the Foothillers (2-0).
A missed extra point late in the game on the part of the visitors proved to be the difference in the contest
“It was a very exciting game and hard fought by both teams,” ORHS head coach Lance Christensen explained. “We simply gave up too many big plays on defense and had too many penalties on offense. You can’t do that and expect to be successful against a good team like Grossmont.”
The Foothillers scored first on a 75-yard pass play from Jared Redfield to Dominique Guevara for a quick 7-0 lead in the game’s opening minute.
The Mustangs evened the score on a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. However, Grossmont broke off another big play, this time a 70-yard touchdown from Khaleed Davis, to go back on top 14-7.
Otay Ranch put together another sustained drive and scored on a two-yard run. But the extra point was no good, leaving the Mustangs on the short end of a 14-13 score.
Jake Haar tacked on an 87-yard sideline run to cap scoring in the first half with the Foothillers posting a 21-13 lead.
Otay Ranch engineered a time-consuming 17-play drive to score on fourth-and-one to trim the score to 21-19. The Mustangs were then successful on a two-point conversion to tie the game at 21-21 with 10:25 left in the game.
The visitors seemed to be in control when Adrian Rodriguez returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown to give Otay Ranch a 27-21 advantage with two-and-a-half minutes to play in the game. But the missed extra point would prove critical to the Mustangs’ fortunes.
Grossmont received the ball with 2:18 left facing 66 yards to go to go for the win. It took one play to do the visitors in as Hunter Gaines hit Davis in open space and the Foothiller speedster slipped down the sideline for a 66-yard touchdown catch and carry.
The Foothillers then hit the extra-point conversion for the win.
Davis had six catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
Otay Ranch hosts Mt. Miguel this Friday in another non-league game. The Matadors are 1-1 and are coming off a 24-6 loss against Poway last Friday.
