Local spikers advance in CIF girls volleyball playoffs

Thirteen South County teams qualified for this year’s San Diego Section girls volleyball playoffs, including nine from the Metro Conference.

This year’s girls volleyball playoffs feature six divisions: Division I, Division II, Division III, Division IV, Division V and the Open Division.

Sixteen teams are seeded in Division I, Division II, Division III and Division IV. Twelve teams are seeded in Division V while eight teams are seeded in the Open Division.

Mesa League champion Eastlake (32-8) received the No. 2 seed in the Open Division and will open quarterfinal play on Saturday against seventh-seeded Westview (20-16). The winner advances to Wednesday’s semifinals.

Cathedral Catholic (30-4) is seeded first in the Open Division playoffs while La Costa Canyon (28-11) is seeded third.

Mesa League runner-up Otay Ranch received the No. 2 seed among Division II teams while Olympian was seeded third in the same division.

Bonita Vista was seeded No. 2 among Division III teams.

Otay Ranch swept 15th-seeded Helix 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 in Tuesday’s opening round.

Olympian defeated 14th-seeded Vista 3-1 by scores of 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 also on Tuesday.

Mater Dei Catholic received the No. 5 seed in Division II and defeated 12th-seeded Mission Vista 3-0 in a sweep.

In Division II quarterfinal matches on Friday, Otay Ranch (32-7) will host seventh-seeded Classical Academy (20-9) while Olympian (22-5) will host sixth-seeded Rancho Buena Vista (16-9).

Mater Dei Catholic (22-12) will play at fourth-seeded San Dieguito Academy (26-8).

Winners advance to Tuesday’s semifinal round.

Otay Ranch (8-2 in league) finished runner-up to Eastlake (10-0) in the Mesa League standings while Olympian (6-4 in league) was third. Mater Dei Catholic (3-7 in league) finished fourth in the Mesa League standings while Bonita Vista (2-8 in league) was fifth. Montgomery (1-9 in league) finished sixth.

Bonita Vista (22-12) dispatched 15th-seeded Canyon Hills (13-16) by a 3-1 score in Wednesday’s opening round to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals against seventh-seeded Coronado (17-16).

Coronado eliminated 10th-seeded high Tech High Chula Vista (16-10) by a 3-1 score.

Montgomery (9-20) received the No. 13 seed in Division III and opened at fourth-seeded Fallbrook, ending its season as the Warriors improved to 19-11 with a three-game sweep 25-14, 25-17, 25-18.

Frontier-Summit League champion Chula Vista Learning Community Charter, seeded eighth, ended its season with a 3-1 setback to ninth-seeded Mira Mesa in Wednesday’s opening round. The Bruins bowed out by game scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 25-17 in the Marauders’ favor.

Eighth-seeded Hilltop defeated ninth-seeded Monte Vista 25-20, 22-25, 25-11, 25-10 in Tuesday’s opening round of the Division IV playoffs to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals at top-seeded Holtville (26-5). The South Bay league runner-up Lancers take a 16-17 record into the elimination match.

South Bay League champion Southwest received the No. 6 seed in the Division IV playoffs but suffered a 3-2 home court loss to 11th-seeded Clairemont on Tuesday. The Raiders (12-1 in league) ended their season 16-14 overall.

Hilltop and Mar Vista finished with 9-3 league records, followed by San Ysidro at 5-7, Chula Vista and Sweetwater at 4-8 and Castle Park at 0-13.

San Ysidro (10-19) received the No. 16 seed in the Division IV playoffs, bowing 25-8, 25-5, 25-4 to Holtville in Tuesday’s opening round.

Chula Vista (10-17) received the No. 9 seed in the Division V playoffs and dropped a highly competitive opening round match 3-2 to eighth-seeded Madison (14-10) on Tuesday. The host Warhawks won 25-21, 25-20, 23-25,25-21, 15-10.

Victory Christian Academy (9-12) upset the seventh-seeded Monarch Royals (11-11) by a score of 3-1 to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals against second-seeded Del Lago Academy (20-2).

The Division I and Division III quarterfinals are scheduled Saturday, followed by semifinals on Nov. 3. The Division I, Division II and Division III championship games are slated for Nov. 6 at Cathedral Catholic High School.

The Division IV and Division V quarterfinals are scheduled Friday, followed by the semifinals on Nov. 2, and championship games Nov. 5 at Canyon Crest Academy.
