Four-time Olympian helps South Coast Water Polo Club kick off new year

Four-time Olympian Jesse Smith held a day camp for more than 35 members of the South Coast Water Polo Club, ages 8 through 13, on Jan. 7 at Mar Vista High School.

As part of the South Coast Water Polo Club’s kickoff to the new year, the club hosted a day camp on Jan. 7 with four-time Olympian Jesse Smith.

Smith instructed more than 35 kids ages 8 through 13 during the event.

The South Coast Water Polo Club is accepting athletes ages 8 through 18. Locations are the Las Palmas Pool in National City Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Mar Vista on Saturday at 8 a.m.

Smith, a graduate of Coronado High School, is planning to try out for the 2020 Olympic team.

He won three San Deigo Section Division II championship titles from 1998 through 2000 with the Islanders before going on to attend Pepperdine University.

Smith played for the United States men’s national team during the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal in 2008.

South Coast will be competing in a 15U division in the San Diego County League on Sunday, Jan. 21 and in a 17U division on Jan 28. For more information about fees, times and scholarships, contact coacherniemedina@gmail.com.
