Devilish fun on tap at OnStage just in time for Halloween

Does Halloween get you in the mood for a little blood and gore? If so, OnStage Playhouse’s production of “Carrie: The Musical” is right up your dark alley.

OnStage provides both an empathetic and horrific rendition of this version of Stephen King’s classic book and subsequent cult movie. It may seem odd to recast a horror film as a musical, but with the engaging numbers by Michael Gore (that’s right, gore), and strong voices of the cast, music adds an emotional touch.

As a result, the audience feels empathy for Carrie and students who are concerned about Carrie.

An outcast because of her nervous and meek behavior, Carrie is a perfect target to be bullied by her classmates. Part of Carrie’s inability to fit in results from being raised by her religious-fanatic and abusive mother.

Carrie discovers she has a special power and is not afraid to use it. From the beginning of the show, it’s established that the senior prom ends in terror and death. Ultimately, the play centers on the devastating effects of bullying.

The young cast nails it, looking and acting the part of high school students with their insecurities and intolerance of the weaker ones. All the leads are excellent in both acting and singing.

Mary Grace Sumner portrays Carrie with the range of emotions that the role requires. Sue (Lauren Ashely) and Tommy (Jake Strohl) are well-drawn in their misguided efforts to help Carrie. Chris (Sierra McMurty) is appropriately evil.

Both the mother (Wendy Waddell) and the P.E. teacher (Lenelle Wylie) are outstanding in their roles.

Director Teri Brown has created another powerful play with young people, as she did previously with “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” and “Spring Awakening.”

The set design by Duane McGregor was unique and set the mood. Choreographer Patrick Mayuyu allowed the students to show their feelings and reactions.

In the lobby, attendees can get a fun photo while acting out Carrie’s role. The audience was enthusiastic in its applause and verbal praise of the performance.

The show runs through Nov. 3. All tickets are $25 with senior/student and group discounts available. Curtain times are Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
