CAMPAIGN 2022 SCHOOL BOARD

Noemi Abrego, 38 Career specialist Candidate Sweetwater Union High School District Area 3

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD?

I am running for school board because of my children. I feel a calling to make a change in our community.

Noemi Abrego

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE PRIORITIES IF ELECTED?

I want to be sure that the needs of our children as well as our values are well represented.

We need to do a full audit on the COVID money SUHSD received significantly high amounts of funding.

The people should have the allocated money receipts. We need to support our teachers and become an inclusive environment with all the people.

We need to involve parents in helping students in schools. e.g. I am not allowed on my child’s campus. Parents feel alienated. We need more transparency.

WITH STUDIES SHOWING STUDENTS ARE BEHIND DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WHAT WOULD YOU DO ON THE POLICY LEVEL IN ENSURING STUDENTS BEHIND ARE ABLE TO CATCH UP?

We need to help the students with after school tutoring at elementary schools. My child has suffered immensely because of the years that have been lost.

There needs to be school teaching aides inside the classrooms if possible or and cut any unnecessary spending and return back to the classrooms.

ARE YOU A PROPONENT OF ARMED TEACHERS IN CLASSROOMS AS A WAY OF ADDRESSING SCHOOL SAFETY FOR STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND STAFF?

I support teachers’ right to their civil liberties and rights to defend themselves and or others in emergency situations. We can collaborate with community programs such as alpha project in order to help their needs. We can reach out to the community, such as churches, for those students and families.

UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES IS IT APPROPRIATE TO BAN BOOKS FROM SCHOOL CLASSROOMS AND LIBRARIES?

Books are to be banned if they are too sexualized and inappropriate for them. If they are not comfortable about books they may not like, why would they be forced to read them?

WHAT PAST BOARD EFFORTS WOULD YOU AMPLIFY OR GROW, AND ARE THERE ANY WHICH YOU WOULD PHASE OUT?

We need to do a complete assessment of damage.

Every year the maintenance department job is to keep the grounds when needed yet, something happened to lead up to this. Why? We deserve answers.  If needed, retain a construction manager to get the job done. I’ve seen it, that’s been at least a decade of neglect. Why funds had not been put into the school is unacceptable. If funds can be somehow transferred to the west side schools for a few years in order to relieve the needs of the students and structures, we need to balance that.  Maybe also, fundraising, anything but not doing anything is not okay.

My three children are growing up in Chula vista and it is very important to put all of our children first and priority, also to have a full understanding and that we are all raising these children but our rights and theirs must be protected, the bureaucrats in schools needs to stop, and let parents be involved in their students’ education and teachers can focus on what they love to do and we will support them too.
