The Eastlake High School baseball team defeated the Helix Highlanders, 7-0, to win last year’s San Diego Section Open Division championship.

Not much has changed in the intervening year after the Titans clubbed the Scotties, 13-2, last Saturday at Granite Hills High School in the title game of this year’s Grossmont/Metro/City Conference tournament.

Micah Pietila-Wiggs led off the game for Eastlake with a home run and Ricky Tibbett pitched the Titans to their 12th victory of the season in 15 starts.

Freshman Marcelo Mayer and senior Grant Holman keyed the hitting parade.

“It was a great win for us,” EHS head coach Dave Gallegos said. “We came to play. We’re coming together as a group. We graduated seven seniors from last year’s team. The kids are buying into what we’re doing, and it’s showing.”

Senior Brian Leonhardt pitched (and hit) the Titans to their 13th victory in 16 starts as Eastlake topped the host Bonita Vista Barons, 10-3, in the teams’ Mesa League opener on Tuesday.

Leonhardt struck out 10 batters while clearing the bases with a double to help his own cause at the plate.

“It’s a great start,” Gallegos reiterated. “The kids are buying in and we’re really having the senior group leading the way.”

Bonita Vista, which dropped a 1-0 decision at Chula Vista on Monday, fell to 6-10 overall, 0-2 in league play. Isaac Almendarez drove in two runs in Tuesday’s loss.

In a Mesa League game on Monday, Hilltop edged Otay Ranch 6-5.
