The Bonita Vista High School roller hockey team accomplished something it has not done in who knows when Tuesday night when the Barons defeated the the defending Mesa League co-champion Eastlake Titans, 11-7, to complete a three-game sweep in the teams’ 2019-20 season schedule.

It’s been so long that such has happened that it’s been subjectively erased from memory.

“It’s been years and years since we have made a three-game sweep over our rivals, the Eastlake Titans,” confessed BVHS head coach Keith Quigley, whose team solidified its second-place position in the league standings with the eye-popping win.

Sophomore Maxwell Anderson paced the Barons on offense by scoring all 11 goals while senior goaltender Faith Sunga played well down the stretch to keep her team on top.

Bonita Vista led 5-3 at the end of the first period and 8-4 through two periods.

“We started out slow at the beginning but picked it up midway through the game,” Quigley assessed. “Max had an amazing, phenomenal performance. Others look at Max and see he’s got 50 or 60 goals. But he does more than just score goals. He back-checks. He gets back on defense, he passes to his teammates and he tries to set them up.”

He has become the team’s best likeness for Wayne Gretzky.

Anderson staked Bonita Vista (11-3 overall, 7-2 in league) to a quick 2-0 lead and tacked on two more quick goals after the Titans (5-5 in league, 8-6 overall) had initially halved the score on a goal by Kevin Eagles.

Gavin Gementera scored back-to-back goals to make the score 4-3 before Anderson answered the call once again with a goal to end the opening period.

Anderson opened the second period with two more goals to push the Barons in front 7-3 on an especially chilly night at the outdoor Castle Park High School rink.

Brendan Scharmann scored the opening goal of the third period to make the score 7-5 but that was as close as Eastlake would get over the balance of the game.

Bonita Vista twice led by five goals – 10-5 and 11-6 – midway through the third period.

The 11 goals are a personal best in roller hockey for the Baron skater.

“It was a competitive game, so I felt I had to step it up,” said Anderson, who has collected 61 goals and 20 assists for 81 points in 14 games this season.

Diego and Keala Nunes both picked up two assists while Aaron Pangilinan also was credited with an assist for the Barons.

Gementera led Eastlake with four goals while Eagles scored twice.

Bonita Vista will compete in this weekend’s Pam Wiser Classic at the CPHS rink. Pool games in the eight-team draw are Friday and Saturday. Teams are guaranteed four games.

Friday’s schedule run from 4-7:30 p.m. Saturday’s games are scheduled from 8-11:30 a.m.

“It’s been an exciting season so far,” Quigley said. “We’re excited the Pam Wiser tournament is happening.”
