Otay Ranch, Olympian turn in solid wins to push records to 2-1

The Otay Ranch Mustangs appear to be stepping up the ladder after defeating the visiting Mt. Miguel Matadors, 28-0, last Friday. The dominating non-league win gave the Mustangs a 2-1 record on the season and served the ease the memory of the previous week’s 28-27 loss to the Grossmont Foothillers.

“It was a hard fought, very physical game by both teams,” Otay Ranch head coach Lance Christensen said of the pigskin win over the Matadors.

The Mustangs struck through the air with four touchdown passes thrown by quarterback Oscar Limon, who finished the night with 11 completions in 21 attempts for 188 yards and a season best 122.6 quarterback-rating.

Tight end Ennovy Halton caught four passes for 92 yards, with two going for scores. Halton also scored on a two-point conversion. Wide receiver/cornerback Adrian Rodriguez (two catches, 32 yards) and fullback Fanu Autele (two catches, 13 yards) also caught touchdown passes.

Running back Sam Stephens rushed 21 times for 112 yards to account for the bulk of the host team’s 156 total rushing yards.

On defense, Rodriguez had one interception while outside linebacker Fenuki Kauvaka had three sacks and inline linebacker Nick Sandoval had 10 total tackles.

Devin Lloyd punted twice for a 35.5-yard average.

Otay Ranch scored one touchdown in each quarter, leading 13-0 at halftime.

The Matadors dropped to 1-2 on the season.

On the season, Limon has completed 27 of 60 passing attempts for 457 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions while Stephens has amassed 367 rushing yards and is averaging 122.3 yards per game.

Rodriguez has eight catches for 137 yards and has made two interceptions. He also has a team co-leading three touchdowns — one rushing, one receiving and one on a punt return.

Halton (five catches, 110 yards) has three receiving TDs to his credit.

Sandoval leads the team with 30 total tackles, followed by Sergio Ayon with 23. Kauvaka has three sacks while teammates Luis Acosta and Hector Gonzales each have two sacks.

The Mustangs host third-ranked St. Augustine on Friday, Sept. 11. The Saints (2-1) are coming off a 23-20 loss at Loyola Los Angeles last Friday.

Elijah Preston leads the defending Division I champions with 505 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. Francoise Sims II has rushed for only 74 yards but scored three rushing touchdowns while quarterback Rodney Thompson has rushed for 72 yards and scored one touchdown.

Thompson has completed 33 of 44 passes on the season (.750) for 419 yards and five touchdowns with one interception.

Eleven Saints have caught passes this season, including Preston with four catches for 76 yards. Preston has one receiving touchdown to give him a team-leading six TDs. He leads the team with 581 all-purpose yards.

Quinn Seau leads St. Augustine defensively with 24 tackles, followed by Sims with 18 stops. Andrew Alves has two sacks to his credit while Darrell Broussard and Terry Wright each have one interception.

The Saints’ depth speaks volume for their section top 10-ranking. Eight players have scored at least one touchdown. Liam Griste has made 13 of 15 extra-point conversions.

The Olympian Eagles captured their second consecutive win by stopping the visiting Morse Tigers with a shutout. OHS head coach Paul Van Nostrand called last Friday’s victory a “good team win against a physical Morse team.”

Michael Kipling (11 carries, 91 yards), Noah Lacsina (13 carries, 78 yards) and Paul Thompson (1 catch, 63 yards) each scored touchdowns while kicker Ralphie Gomez booted two extra-points and a pair of 20-yard field goals to round out the scoring against the Tigers (0-2).

Olympian rushed for 226 yards, with Garry Cannon’s TD pass to Thompson the only completed pass in the game for the winners. Cannon rushed 10 times for 53 yards to augment his 63 yards in the passing department.

Cannon has passed for 197 yards in three games with one touchdown and no interceptions and has rushed for 177 yards with two touchdowns.

Lacsina has rushed for 220 yards and scored three touchdowns while Kipling has rushed for 173 yards and also scored three touchdowns.
