Jaguars remain in the win column, pound Pasadena City 58-29

The Southwestern College football team is entering the more meaningful part of its schedule. The Jaguars, fresh off a 58-29 non-divisional victory against visiting Pasadena City College last Saturday to improve to 4-0 on the season, have earned the No. 3 ranking among the Southern California Football Association’s American Division teams.

Southwestern gets a shot at No. 2-ranked Citrus (3-0) in its next game on Saturday, Oct. 1.

“The game at Citrus will for sure be our most difficult,” SWC head coach Ed Carberry assessed. “They have great speed on defense which equates to good coverage in the kicking game, which results in a field position game. We, too, have been outstanding in the kicking game.

“We have won the kicking game segment in the last three games. It should be a hard fought tough football game.”
The Jaguars piled up points from the onset in last Saturday’s victory against Pasadena City to lead 28-14 after the opening quarter and 41-23 at halftime.

The hosts piled up 648 yards in total offense — 367 passing yards and 281 net rushing yards.

Mike Glass completed 12 of 26 passing attempts for 278 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed 11 times for 70 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Tajon Mondy rushed two times for 17 yards and also completed a halfback pass for a 70-yard touchdown completion.
Former Eastlake High School standout Isaiah Strayhorn rushed 11 times for 95 yards and scored one touchdown.
Geremiah Satele rushed nine times for 58 yards while Marquis Williams rushed three times for 33 yards.

Ryan Stokes had a big night to lead SWC’s receivers with seven catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Williams had three catches for 87 yards and one touchdown while Mondy had three catches for 77 yards and one touchdown.

SWC scored five touchdowns on plays of 40 yards or more.

Place-kicker Aeden Johnson (Eastlake) converted one of two field goal attempts and seven of eight extra-point attempts. He averaged 60 yards on 10 kickoffs with two touchbacks.

Matt Secrest led the Jags with eight tackles while Demetrious Gibbs, Donell Pleasant, J.J. Dallas and Manny Machaco each recorded interceptions. Rasheed Farha recorded one sack.

Secrest and David Gonzales both had forced fumbles.

Pasadena City committed six turnovers in the game.

Team leaders
•Glass is averaging 198.3 passing yards per game and has thrown eight scoring passes.

•Satele is averaging 74.7 rushing yards per game.

•Stokes is averaging 102.3 receiving yards per game while Williams is averaging 71.3 receiving yards per game. Stokes has scored seven touchdowns while Williams has scored four touchdowns.

•Farha has recorded two sacks.

Carberry suggested the team isn’t necessarily rebuilding but reaping the rewards of staying healthy. “We have had a strong group recently … 10-1, 9-2, 10-1 and 4-6 … injuries were the story to our previous season,” the SWC coach said. “We went through six quarterbacks and we only had four (listed on the roster).

“For the most part we have stayed healthy at the key positions and we have two quarterbacks who have both played well. Our secondary is the strongest that we have had for the previous 10 years.”
