Montgomery Aztecs bowl over Crawford Colts, win 57-6

The Montgomery Aztecs righted themselves from a 30-0 non-league loss to the San Marcos Knights on Sept. 16 by defeating the visiting Crawford Colts, 57-6, last Friday. Charles Williams rushed 10 times for 135 yards and scored three touchdowns while quarterback Harley Armada completed six of 12 passing attempts for 136 yards and three additional scores.

Montgomery rushed for 219 yards. Marcos Mathis had six carries for 41 yards while Aust’n Morga carried the ball three times for 20 yards and Armada had two carries for 23 yards.

The Aztecs trailed 6-0 early on an 85-yard pass completion. But the hosts quickly regained the upper hand with 20 unanswered first quarter points.

Morga caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Armada while Williams scored on runs of 45 and 28 yards.

Montgomery tacked on 10 more points in the second quarter to lead 30-6 at halftime. Armada completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jaime Arredondo and Joey Gonzalez kicked a 37-yard field goal.

The Aztecs closed out the second half with 27 points, including a 20-point scoring bulge in the third quarter.

Morga caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Armada, Mathis scored on a 13-yard run and Williams added another 28-yard scoring run to complete his touchdown collection on the night.

Morga closed out scoring in the game by returning a blocked punt 35 yards for a touchdown.

Armando Serna had 10 kickoffs for 241 yards, including a longest effort of 56 yards to go with four touchbacks. Gonzalez also tacked on six point-after-touchdown conversions in the game.

The Colts, who defeated the Rock Academy by a 20-13 score on Sept. 17, dropped to 1-2.

Montgomery opened the season with back-to-back non-league victories against Central Union (40-6 on Sept. 2) and El Cajon Valley (20-14 on Sept. 9).

Willliams rushed for 157 yards and scored two touchdowns in the win over ECV.

On the season, Williams has carried the ball 58 times for 563 yards and is averaging 9.7 yards per carry. He leads the team with eight touchdowns.

Through four games, Armada has completed 16 of 34 passing attempts for a modest 196 yards and three touchdowns.

Morga has eight catches for 96 yards to lead the Aztec receivers.

Montgomery next plays at Calexico (0-3) on Friday, Sept. 30, in a non-league game. Kick-off is 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 37-0 non-league loss to Yucca Valley.
