The Bonita Vista Barons got a jump on the rest of the local competition by hosting the Montgomery Aztecs in a non-league dual meet Sept. 1 at Discovery Park. The Barons swept all three races — varsity boys, girls and junior varsity boys — by identical 15-50 scores.

BV coach Ed Winczowski indicated he was pleased by his team’s first outing.

Bonita Vista placed the first eight runners in both the varsity boys and girls races and notched the first 12 finishers in the 37-deep boys JV race.

Caesar Castillo (17:17), Jose Suarez (17:28), Austin Johnson (17:40), Kevin Yen (17:57) and Alex Dominguez (18:03) finished as the Barons’ top five scorers in the 16-deep boys varsity race. Also placing ahead of the Aztecs’ top finisher (Eddie Macias in 19:08) for the hosts were Christian Gutierrez (18:17), Jacob Sherman (18:23) and Devon Helle (18:52).

The 19-deep girls race featured a glut of runners at the lead, with three BV harriers making a final dash for the finish line. Raelene deArmas crossed the line first in 15:43, followed by teammates Kristen Lamprecht (15:44) and Jennifer Yang (15:46). Sisters Clarrissa Hernandez (15:57) and Claudia Hernandez (16:41) rounded out the team’s five scorers.

Finishing ahead of Montgomery’s Brandy Sanchez (17:15) for the Barons were Anna Skomal (16:42), Denisse Bautista (16:45) and Cynthia Rendon (16:55).

Javier Reyes (18:36) and Christian Kelley (18:39) led the Barons across the finish line in the JV boys race.

The Barons will field a split squad for two events this Friday — the Mustang/East Hills Realty Invitational at Rohr Park (3:05 p.m. start) and the Showdown at Sundown at CSU San Marcos.
