Wheeled robber sentenced

A man in a wheelchair who held up one business in Chula Vista and tried to rob another one has been sentenced to two years and eight months in state prison.

Daniel Meza, 49, was given credit for 98 days in jail and was fined $1,533 by Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Francis Devaney.

Meza was ordered to pay $150 to a woman for damages to her windshield when he hit her car with a metal object while screaming about the devil in a separate case, said Deputy District Attorney Christopher Chandler.

On Nov. 29, 2016, Meza simulated having a gun and announced to people he would kill everyone if they didn’t give him some money as he held up Paty’s Barber Shop at 1099 Third Ave. Meza pleaded guilty Jan. 18 to robbery and attempted robbery of a clerk at a nearby 7-Eleven store.

Chula Vista Police found Meza in front of Walgreens at Third Avenue and Naples Street. He had one hand concealed in his jacket pocket, and told officers he had a gun. He also said he wanted to die.

Police reported Meza struggled with officers and no weapon was found after he was arrested.

Other charges that were dismissed include an attempted robbery and burglary at a cell phone store, disturbing the peace, and resisting a police officer. Meza pleaded guilty without having a preliminary hearing.
