Councilman coffee mulls business friendly practices

In his first Coffee with Councilman Steve Miesen, residents and business owners learned Wednesday night about the city of Chula Vista’s plan in bringing in more businesses to Chula Vista.

Miesen along with guest speakers Chula Vista’s Economic Development Director, Eric Crockett, South County Economic Development Council CEO Cindy Gommper-Graves, Luanne Hulsizer, executive director of the Third Avenue Village Association and Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce CEO Lisa Cohen discussed a plan to about 100 people in attendance about how to make the city better for business.

One of those plans includes Miesen’s new Economic Development Work Plan, which focuses on accomplishing three main objectives; business support, project development and regional collaboration.

Crockett kicked things off with a presentation that detailed the Economic Development Work plan. The plan includes streamlining the application and permitting process for new business owners.

Miesen who is the division manager of Republic Services, the city’s trash and recycling company, said he experienced some the frustration with the permitting process while trying to get the appropriate business licenses and permits.

“We need to change the negativism about the permit processes,” he said. “I think it is important to certainly show the desire and the intent of the city management to streamline those processes and to make it much more business friendly.”

He said he wants to make the process easier.

Crockett said Chula Vista has some great developmental projects in the works that just need funding such as several affordable housing projects, hotels and a park.
