Man admits role in killing Robert Moreno | Sat, Jun 08 2013 12:00 PM

A 19-year-old Chula Vista man has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the 2012 shooting death of a man outside the BoBar Market on F Street near Broadway.

David Chavoya faces a sentence of 25 years to life in prison, said Deputy District Attorney Dave Grapilon. Sentencing is set for July 23 before Chula Vista Superior Court Judge Theodore Weathers.

The victim, Jimmy Rodriguez Jr., 21, of Chula Vista, was shot in the leg and torso and died on the way to a hospital on March 14, 2012. He was shot around 9 p.m. as he was running away.

Chavoya’s co-defendant, Karim Josue Alvarez, 21, of San Diego, who is alleged to be the gunman, was convicted of first-degree murder and will be sentenced in July.

Alvarez punched Rodriguez and argued with him before the shooting, according to store surveillance cameras.

Grapilon said Chavoya was at the market to cash a check, but he saw Rodriguez talking to a girl he knew and became upset. Alvarez was in possession of a gun at the time.

Both Chavoya and Alvarez remain in jail on $1 million bail each since they were arrested March 27, 2012, by Chula Vista Police.
